Title: Couple questions on 1997 U320 I looked at
Post by: Dmueller on September 16, 2024, 11:42:20 am
Hey guys,
Trying to educate myself so I can better understand coach's I'm considering.

Is this rust jacking on this rear bulkhead?

On the instrument panel I assume the amber ABS annunciation is abnormal?

What is normal air pressure?

I plan on having Keith inspect any coach I'm serious about because it is evident these are complex machines.

Thank you,
Derek

Yes that is rust jacking.
Normal air pressure is 120 to 130 when the compressor cycles.
The abs light means there is an issue with the anti lock braking system.

Yes to 1&2 but I think the Ab light is supposed to go out after you get to 5 MPH if it's working right.

If it is rusty there it is likely that it is also rusty in other places. This occurs in Northern used coaches.
Stick your head under the wheel wells and look straight up at the angle header and bolts under the walls. If anything, more than very light surface rust, run!.

It could be the gauges as the pressure release valve pops around 140 psi.

Thank you everyone for your comments. I ruled this one out very quickly but I learned some things looking it over. I plan on looking at more close to me so your comments are helpful.

Is there an easy way to identify delamination?

Looking for delamination stand at either end of the coach and look down the sides and look for "bulges", press in on a suspected area and you will feel where the adhesive has give way.  Pay close attention to under windows and around slides.

On most '97 coaches
1. turn on key
2. listen for 3 distinct clicks from under side
3. let speed odometer and RPM to swing and reset.
4. ABS light should still be on till you move to between 5 & 7MPH
If it don't clear by 7 there is most likely a wheel sensor problem

Depending on the year and style/model of ABS will determine the proper sequence of resetting the ABS

My ABS light turns off 3 seconds after the key is turned on.

The midland-grau ABS systems failed on a lot of these age coaches. Brakes work fine. One of my 97's wheel sensors does not function correctly. Parts not available. Three wheel ABS.

The D2 controller is probably oil soaked. Controls the air pressure. Inexpensive part.

The rust jacking is potentially a more involved issue.

97 40' u320 non slide has the most inside and outside storage of almost any coach. Why? No slide. No tag axle.

A 45' may have as much but I doubt it.

The 97 u320 40' has enough air pressure in its air bags just to hold up its weight that it hardly leans on turns and is very resistant to truck induced wind effects. It also is very stable parked and air leveled so walking around inside does not cause the coach to detectively move. Little wind motion parked. Little wind induced course alterations due to the 276" wheel base.

Kitchen is on the drivers side. Dinette is on the passenger side looking out at your camp sight.

When looking at coaches note how much body shell movement is evident when you grab the exterior entry handle and walk up into the coach. The amount of movement will be directly proportional to the ride and handling effects I posted.

I would look very close at the 97 for the above reasons, aqua hot function ok?

If I could buy it cheap enough the rust jacking is fixable.

I was a Foretravel sales manager long ago in another life and was very technically inclined hence my comments here.

I went through my 97 and in use and driving it's one of the finest rv's ever made. But maybe not  for the faint of wallet.

These are 27 years old. Most systems will need massaging. Results were worth it in my case as I was able to end up with a similar drive and use as the original owner did for $300k plus.

If I could steal it I would do it again. Maybe
