Title: Windshield Privacy Shade
Post by: Brucep86 on October 26, 2024, 02:15:27 pm
We're looking for a front windshield pleated pull across shade similar to the original one that came with our 97 U295.  It pulls out from each side, and attaches to the center of the windshield with velcro.  We don't want powered curtains, just a plain and simple one that came on the older U295's.

Last time I asked Brad at Foretravel the windshield shades were still available.  I was able to purchase new retractable cords for mine from the original manufacturer.  I didn't ask, but since they're still in business I wonder if you can still get them from them.  Eclipse Sunshades I think is the name.

Buy a pair of night light proof roller shades. Mount them to the wood horizontal that now houses two factory speakers above the dash. Overlap the center for privacy. Use continuous pull chain style ends. Add your own vinyl triangle pieces to close off the curved glass areas at the two sides. Use grommets on top of vinyl ends and hang them on cup hooks screwed into the same horizontal carpet area. Allows all of dash surface to be used inside when shades are down. Keep the bottoms soft so they can flow over the back of the dash. Have enough length so the shade can be push against the window bottom. Inexpensive, simple, 100% privacy without a drop of inside light visible from outside at night. Easy to use every night for 20 years without any problems. Important that nobody can see inside from any corner or window from outside for maximum security.

Another strategy to consider. We used a Levolor shade custom cut to fit across windshield. A pull chain type with an adhesive attached magnet on windshield to "store" the chain. We used two sections of 6 in fluted moulding on the edges for privacy that are attached to the wooden valence with Velcro made the height of the opening from dash to back of valence. Makes for quick set up and matched our existing fluted valences on existing window.

Kind of a spin on Barry's description.

PS we used custom color/sized Levolor night cellular shades on the windows. Added to the insulation as well.

Just a note, shade/blind mechanisms now (as of June 1, 2024) have to be either cordless or inaccessible-cord.  Free-hanging (those not permanently tethered and tensioned) chain/cord loop blinds are prohibited from sale, even in the custom market.

I understand why. We had to use a very strong rare earth magnet to secure the chain.

Could the roller shade regulation be recommendations? The Consumer Product and Safety Commission has new rules on blinds and shades that will go into effect on Wednesday, June 1. The safest option when young children are present is to go cordless. CPSC ENCOURAGES consumers to buy and install cordless window coverings FROM https://www.theshadestore.com/shades/roller-shades/custom-roller-shades: Rollers are incredibly versatile. Choose from 3 different control types: Continuous Loop, Cordless, or Motorization. Each has unique benefits. Shades 104" W and up automatically get our Continuous Loop - Lift Assist at no charge. Cordless control carries a 3' minimum surcharge. *Cordless and Motorized control types of have been certified "Best For Kids" by an independent third party in conjunction with the Window Covering Safety Council. Continuous Loop chain control maintains consistent length easy to operate larger shades shades 104" W and up automatically get our Continuous Loop - Lift Assist at no charge

‎Revised Safety Standard Will Result in More Window Coverings Sold in US... (https://windowcoverings.org/revised-safety-standard-2022/#:~:text=In%20addition%2C%20the%202022%20revision,shrouds%2C%20and%20continuous%20cord%20loop)

The revised safety standard, ANSI/WCMA A100.1-2022, eliminates the use of free hanging operating cords, free hanging tilt cords and multiple cords into a cord connector on all made-to-order custom window covering products.  The safety standard continues to require all stock products sold in stores and online to be cordless or have inaccessible cords.

One can custom-order with a permanently-tethered continuous cord or chain, but not a free-hanging one, and professional installers are required to mount the tether.  Ready-made blinds cannot be sold with continuous cord/chain.

I only mentioned the new requirements because someone looking for ready-made is unlikely to find continuous cord/chain for sale anywhere.  The new standard was the #1 topic in workroom boards (home dec/upholstery workrooms) for many months because it upended the custom shade market.

Two years ago Foretravel told us that the blinds were no longer made but they bought one big buy every few years and the bling factory made a special batch for them. They were around $495 then.

In my opinion Foretravel's front windshield accordion pleated shade was not a good design, poor privacy, and many other approaches would be an improvement. It would not be a good idea to spend money on duplicating the shade.

Not a bad price assuming you're talking Pesos.

I am glad my coach came with the power shade for the windshield as it is the best sun visor.
