Title: Needs some help troubleshooting with (I think) an air issue
Post by: kenhat on November 12, 2024, 03:19:56 pm
Preparing to leave the campground today and while cleaning the windshield the hadleys did a short burp. The ignition was on to give the HWH time to get to travel mode but no one was near the driver's seat. Continued cleaning the windshield and they did it again but a longer blast this time. Ok need to check this out.

I go in and see the air pressure gauge orange needle (passinger side tank) bouncing around and a clicking noise coming from under the dash. Here is a video of it on YouTube. I suspect this is the low pressure alarm relay. You can hear the clicking noise in the video. Have no idea what would cause the relay to do this. Also not sure why the hadleys wanted in on the action.

Has anyone had an issue like this before?

I pulled one of the connectors on the relay and everything seems back to semi-normal. No more hadley toots. Added air with external air compressor (equipped with a dryer). Now it's holding air normally while the ignition is off but then drops over time while the ignition is on (only the orange needle). Not fast enough that I can see it but does drop over time. It's down from 120 to 30psi in an hour.

So is it safe to drive with the relay electrically disconnect? I looks like it's only controlling the Low Air warning light. I can monitor air pressure using the gauge. Looks like I could pull it and replace it I can find a truck parts place around here. In a campground near Hohenwald, TN.

Heading to Clarke Power just south of Chattanooga, TN for Allison Trans fluid change. Right at 180 miles. Can have them take a look. Not sure how they would feel working on HWH equipped system. They mainly do trucks.

Thanks

Ken,

On our '93 U280 the solenoid that operates the air horns is tee'd into one of the air lines going to the back side of the combo air gauge (two needles in one gauge).  Could that solenoid in your photo be the one that operates the Hadleys?  See upper left corner of air system diagram linked below:

https://www.foreforums.com/index.php?media/item/b-2036-air-system-1193-u280-whwh.4969/

The air horn solenoid gets the "toot" command from the horn button in the center of the steering wheel.  There have been Forum reports in the past where the wire under the horn button comes loose or breaks and causes weird horn symptoms.  The wire I'm talking about is the yellow wire in the first few photos in the thread linked below:

Photo in post below looks similar to your photo:

What is the part number for the air horn solenoid? (https://www.foreforums.com/index.php?topic=42213.0)

Thanks Chuck. Those posts really helped. I think I can do without my horn for a few days as I have no plans to be in New York City any time soon.

Plan to pull the horn solenoid tomorrow, clean, & reinstall. Fingers crossed.

see ya
