Title: Dometic NDR 1492 refrigerator
Post by: danilaprepeleac on April 26, 2025, 06:42:52 pm
Last year I had some issues with my refrigerator and it was end of the season for me and kind of put it off.
I started the refrigerator this week and so far is working fine  first was on propane and then on electric and is cooling very well.
My question is
Are there cooling fans behind this unit that go bad( I don't see any in the parts drawing) .
The cooling fans that I am reading about is that something new that is proven to get better results.
if there are cooling fans why aren't they represented in the drawing  and finally is how do I access them.

Thank you

Daniel

Originally there were no draft fans behind the unit in the flume. This was/is a popular add on as it does help with the heat dissipation. If you are the original owner and haven't added fans then or the previous owner added them then you may want to add them. As these weren't OEM then there isn't any prints.

Where would be the best place to place this fans
And as far as wiring just grab some power from the control board?

This is what I use in mine. Cheap too, helps a bunch. Mine are just hanging on the coils in the back of the fridge.

Ours are mounted just under the vent cover. This helps pull the air up and out (creates negative pressure in the flume) if fans are mounted low you have positive pressure in the flume and could cause air to be pushed inside the coach if you have leakage room around the trim.

Mike

Now remember this is my opinion and others mount the fan low around the control area for convince.

I also added some additional cooling fans when I had the propane fridge.  I mounted them low and tapped a 12V line in the fridge compartment.  I wiretied them to the cooing coils on the back of the fridge.  If you want to get fancy, it's pretty easy to include a thermostat in the circuit.  That way, the fans don't run all the time.

In the past, you could buy a vent cover with solar cells and fan that would pull from the top.  Don't know if that option is still available.

When I installed a 120V Magic Chef fridge, I also installed some small fans in the compartment to help it run more efficiently.

Yes, adding 12 VDC muffin/computer fans aids an absorption refrigerator's efficiency.

But better to install them at the TOP of the condenser exhausting up-- that way you have linear flow over the condenser rather than added air flow but turbulence.

Access the top from the roof.

I wired mine to a new switch (power from light switch as amp draw is very low) above the stove so I could control when they were on.

If you don't already have one, you should consider adding a Fridge Defend device (Want to Solve your Dometic & Norcold Cooling and Safety Issues? (https://www.arprv.com/)) with fan control. That way you add a fan and add additional protection against a refrigerator fire. I know I feel much more comfortable about my RV refrigerator since I added one.

After more digging and looking around I stuck the camera up to the coils and took a picture and guess what it's up there

Looks like a fan on top of the coils
Can someone tell me what all this extra stuff looks like .
Looks like the previous owner did something to address the cooling problem.
Can some one tell me that is the little device on top of the  Circuit board cover?
Also the fire extinguisher  looks like it's installed there to put out a fire .
Your thought and knowledge are welcome.

That module in you hand is the same as I found on mine. In the circuit.was a button thermal switch that had failed. I believe i see it in your pics but cant trace the wires ti be sure. About a 1" Diameter  1/2" thick disc. Lookes the same as the aqua stats in the fan coils of my hydronic heat.Even when i bypassed the thermal switch i could not get it to work. I rewired mine back to stock then added in a fridge defend.

That was a recall from Dometic to make the fridge safe.
