When I removed the side panels to replace the radiator, I noticed they were just held on with silicone and small screws. Before I repeated a 25-year-old method I wanted to check it there is a updated/better way. I searched the forum with no real success. I know new cars use panel adhesive, but that stuff is crazy strong and tough to get off if ever needed. Any other advice or gotchas I should be aware of?
If your '99 is like mine the silicone was just to keep the water out and the screws are all that hold it on.
Any screws I've had to remove I replac w stainless, usually longer or a size up (or both!) ...I've also relocated some (and shoot some polyurethane adhesive in the old unused holes)
I agree that the silicone is just to keep water out.
Also, you have a run of screws holding the cover hinge on, and then the beltline goes over the top with more screws thru everything correct?
Yep that is what I have. I did get some SS screws to replace the old ones. I will see how they fit and move a size up as suggested. Thanks!
