Title: Requesting sconce details (Rich Bowman)
Post by: Michelle on June 10, 2025, 06:16:29 pm
Awhile back, Phranko posted this photo which showed some very stylish sconces

What did you do to your coach today X (2024) (https://www.foreforums.com/index.php?topic=48468.msg489999#msg489999)

According to his reply, they were made by @Rich Bowman  (paging Rick)

Might we get some details on how they were made?  We want to replace our sconces and I haven't found anything I like remotely as much as the one in that photo.

Thanks!

Michelle

Michelle,

I made them with some scrape I had in the shop.  I had them mounted 180 degrees different than Phranko.  Light on the top, not the bottom.

I planed some cherry down to 3/8" and the inside/back is some white masonite to help reflect the light.  The lens is cut from a piece of florescent light fixture lens and slides into a small dado cut in the cherry.  Phranko must have glued them in, because I would expect them to slideout when mounted in that orientation.  The electrical guts (light socket, bulb and push-button switch) were salvaged from the old brass swing-arm lamps they replaced.  The switch is recess mounted in the end opposite the lens.

If you'd like some pictures, you will have to ask him, as he got all the ones I built.

We did not find them to be particularly good for task lighting.  They were great for accent lighting.  I replaced them with some lights I got from Amazon.  Amazon.com: 12V Boat Reading Lights - RV Interior Bedside Lights with... (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07DN696JJ?ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_fed_asin_title&th=1)
Picture included of the install.  I made the base from some scrape cherry in the shop.  Much better task lighting for reading on the sofa or the dinette.

I have these same sconces as Rich.  They are dimmable and great reading lights, and accent lights when rotated up.  Made the back plates out of walnut trophy blanks off the jungle site.

Thanks Rich.  I think if we (meaning me have Steve) wanted to duplicate them, that's adequate to go on.

I appreciate your and Woody's input on that Amazon light.  It was one I'd come across in my searching for something replace the swing-arm lights by the headboard.  Feedback from folks here on the forum is more reliable than reading Amazon reviews, so I'll be ordering a couple  ^.^d

Sad that over the years it looks like Gustafson and now ITC are offering the bare minimum in fixtures.  When we replaced the sconces in the '03, there were seemingly hundreds of options to choose from in the Gustafson catalog.

Thanks for the info Rich, I was actually going to message you and ask about the material used as I need to make 1 more.

They are mounted 180 from your install, lens glued. Tossed the guts and used LED strip lighting, with a new switch.
Only regret is that the Forum didn't get any Amazon money..... we think they are absolutely perfect for our coach.

Thanks Michelle for knocking one item off my "to do" list.

Please report back on your build.  And if you need more items for a "to do" list, I can send you some ideas  ;)  (new LR sconces are #217 on my spreadsheet of things we've done or want to do on WildE).

Do we get to see the spreadsheet?

You're in luck - 217 is current the last item on the list; 218 is "do nothing"!

And 172 of the items on the list are done.

I'm looking forward to your write up on the under counter lighting.
