Title: Cummins water pump install estimate
Post by: Lt403 on July 22, 2025, 09:41:33 pm
Hi everyone,

Is this reasonable?

Here is the estimate to remove and replace the water pump from the Jacksonville Cummins Service Center.

Frank,

For that price I hope they at least give you a kiss as that seems like rape to me. If they don't reinstall the orifice you will be back in there to have a redo. You can do this DIY as others here have done. If you get started and gets stumped just ask.

Cummins is never reasonable priced. If you can't do there is probably a local diesel mechanic that can for way less.

We just got in to MOT a few hours ago for a windshield tomorrow.

I didn't know what to think when I saw the estimate which is why I posted.

Can someone recommend a mechanic in the Nacagdoches area since we always pass through here to get work done.

Although I'd like to DIY I don't have a place to do it.

Curios to know if my estimate would be the same at all Cummins Service Centers.

Are you talking about the cooler disc orifice pictured below?

Yes. If they don't know what that is in there for some shops have just thrown that orifice away thinking it is junk. I know of at least 2 coaches that have had this happen to.

What about asking MOT for an estimate, since you are there?

Or, at least ask them for a recommendation for a mechanic who does this kind of work.

Could also ask Keith Risch there in Nach for a recommendation.

I think some shops are trying to use "inflation" as a reason for crazy high prices. I could do TWO inframes for less than that estimate.

Don't know about a Cummins but our Detroit has the pump right in front of you when you open the engine door. How hard is that to change?  Here is a pump for a M11 @ $189.74 local warehouse, free shipping from Temu: truck mechanical water pump wp 2440 engine cooling fit for m11 qsm11 ism11... Thank you for posting the exact part to avoid. Cheap plastics impellers will make the 12 month warrantee period but fail at the worst time. OEM has a cast impeller. He is being asked to spend 3300 in install labor. At that point I want an actual OEM part. Yes I would like to pay $190 but I dont want to repeat a $3300 install charge. Seems odd that all the coaches dont run Detroits. They sound so much superior

On the road till August right now but I had the thermostat replaced, didn't solve the overheating.  Then they continued wackamole diagnostics and replaced the water pump which solved the issue.  Think it was $5700 at a shop in Denver last year.  It was comical and frustrating since I had to pay for an hour+ of diagnosis each time at $260/hr. I had to source the water pump for them since they couldn't "find" one. (Then they said I had to pay 25% of the new one as a service fee) They wanted to replace with one with the plastic impeller.  And that was why mine failed. I had replaced in 2019 with a non oem water pump.  Highly recommend going with oem rebuilt or new if you have time.  Scott DSD & Mark Cooper can chime in since he helped on the phone emergency call line😊😊. I ended up finding a rebuilt WP.

I asked this morning at MOT. They said they have replaced the water pump on another coach before and would look at it and get back with me.

Would definitely get all the parts from Cummins.

If you can wait till October. or nov. you can do it here, have tools and you could stay here, don't want to do it in 100 degree heat.
we could work some sort of deal out.

Even though it's slightly aged, these RV's are still million-dollar rigs when it comes to maintenance costs. Just like boats and airplanes. Gotta fix it yourself, have a fat wallet, or have a maintenance plan with reliable independent mechanics on call.

Even at $300 per hour labor costs (which is asinine, but lets say that's what cummins cost), that water pump is not a 10hour job. They possibly upcharge because working on RVs is a pain for them. They rather deal with commercial trucks.

Yes totally crazy. Tommy thanks for mentioning your issue. I HATE working on the side of the road so much so if I get a spare part and carry I'll never use it???  Well at least it's hopeful thinking. Im confident if it came off without issue it's a doable job. BUT if you start breaking off bolts or need to repair something else id much rather be at home on my own time table. It's a big job on the ISM. Gear driven on the backside of the gearbox below the thermostat housing. I also would recommend to replace the hoses while you have them out that attach to it in that area. Mine is only 25 years old? Might be a good time to spend some money proactively before it looses any more value in the bank. Wonder if I could order repair parts for mine from Cummins? Just rebuild mine?

Frank,

Here is another thought or 3.

If you DIY you can also replace the "O" rings on the oil cooler while you are in the area. Somewhere on the forum there is a part number for these O rings. It ain't but 6 bolts to remove the oil cooler and is a lot easier to get to with the water pump off. Now do you think Cummins would suggest doing this at this time or wait till you have a leak and charge you another XX hours of labor to go back in there. (Yes I'm calling them out) Also you will want to replace the water pump hose even though the OEM should be silicone.

With you being down in Nac. for what ever reason if you are interested you could come up here and DIY it here while it's hot. If you can get by till cool weather this fall that would be better. Now a side note on this, long ago a forum member said that we (back before my father passed) were nothing but shade tree mechanics. Well after the tornado that passed over the back yard and uprooter the big oak tree we no longer have a shade tree. So I guess this was an upgrade storm.

John & Mike,
Thank you both for the offer, it's greatly appreciated!

It is hot, we've been on the road since April and there has been no issues with overheating, especially these last couple of weeks on our way back .
I've had to add about 2 gallons since April and about 4300 miles traveled so far.

I will continue to shop for parts and will reach out later during the cooler months to see if you are available.

Thanks again

To add to above, get every coolant hose on the engine,if the gaskets and o-rings are cheap, get doubles and triples, get penatrent
to soak bolts,if the bolts break they can be drilled out and heli coiled, they have left handed bits for that.

they have left handed bits for that.

I think that everyone that works on projects should get a set of left hand bits.  As you start to drill a bolt it will pull it's self out while you are drilling it. I don't think I have ever used an easy out since I got set of these drill bit.

FYI. If you have your grandson helping you, you can sit there watching him try to drill something when he grabbed the reverse drill bit and tried to drill a hole in something.

Interesting - I guess I'd be reluctant to introduce anything into the cooling system that can become debris if it doesn't get a good bond.  What's the advantage?  (I hope this is still considered on topic...?)

I wonder if any cavitation inside might loosen the powder coating on the inside. Cavitation on wet liners can actually chunk off metal. 50/50 coolant should keep rust at bay.

Many water pumps had a red Rustoliem coating on the impeller side. I always painted the insides of my race engines with it to speed oil flow back to the pan. powder coating would also improve flow. Aren't outboard engines used in saltwater powder coated also?

Went to Cummins in Cincinnati years ago and they up charged about 25% just because it was an RV, really not very my different from a city bus with a rear engine!
RV repair prices have gone through the roof, appear to be increasing faster than the prices we charge our clients !
