Title: coolant additive
Post by: rinron on July 31, 2025, 03:59:00 pm
Hi, Has anyone out there tried WaterWetter or some other coolant additive?  I have a 6V-92 that can run on the warm side.
I have had some success with WaterWetter in my hotrods.  Thanks, Ron

Water Wetter is basically a "wetting" agent that breaks up the surface tension of the coolant do that it maintains in contact with the "hot" surfaces. If you are using a proper antifreeze for heavy duty Disel engines that is part of the specifications. Primarily Diesel engines need this wetting agent to prevent bubbles and the resulting cylinder cavitation erosion. Years ago this was done with supplemental coolant additives, (SCA) either in liquid or sometimes as part of the coolant filters. Current technology is to use one for extended life coolants, (ELC) such as Global Final Charge. Using the correct modern coolant, eliminates the need for most additives.

Thanks Dennis,I am told to run just green coolant as the dd does not have full liners.I am running an SCA filter.

That may have been an acceptable coolant for that engine back then. Research cylinder cavitation erosion for the Ford Power Strokes. Not only do I recommend the Global final charge but use the pre-mix. You want to avoid ever using tap especially well water in the cooling system. That eliminates the need to the SCA filter. The EL coolants can also tolerate some cross contamination with conventional coolant. The downside of the low surface tension coolants is that if anything can leak, it will and will leave a residue trail. Also, since these coolants do not use abrasives for corrosion control water pumps and radiators, heater cores last longer.

S0, in my 1996 8.3 Cummins I can run the el final charge coolants?

I would! it really works that much better and since there will always be a cooling system repair of some sort it really eliminates the coolant change task. I use for most of the vehicles I work on. Older stuff primary VW Vanagons. Vanagons eat water pumps and those outer cylinder head seals. This stuff seams to nearly double the life of those components.
