You do have to go to the forum to post a new topic.
BUT - If you have instant notifications turned on for that group, you will get an email notifying you with what is contained.
You can then reply to that email, and continue an email string.
For me, this is important as it allows me to snap off a quick response to someone that need assistance. I can't speak to digest functionality, as I never used it.
Cross posting to the yahoo forum
Hey Dave,
Steve actually has the "start new topic" working, he just hasn't released the e-mail addresses needed to direct the topic to the appropriate board.
He'll make a post this evening with that information (he just has to set up the "forwarders")
Michelle
Michelle, that's really good news. Steve has been working his heart out and we have all benefit from it in an amazingly short period of time. I am replying to this post via email, and I am confident that it's working just fine. A long time ago someone told me that "if you're not part of the solution, you're part of the problem." I'm certain there may be some remorse about leaving one sight or the other. For now I'm content monitoring both sights until nearly all of our most knowledgeable members make the switch. As of now, I believe that those who know the most have already enrolled in the Foreforums. At some point, I too may just monitor this sight just due to time constraints. But, somehow I know that a lot of members will check on both as it is their prerogative to try to be of service to those who need help from time-to-time. Just smile and know that your efforts are deeply appreciated.
it wouldn't accept my reply from the email marked 'Question', so here
you go:
Yep - I was replying to just George. When it failed I just sent an email
to him, since I had his address anyway.
I noticed the email on that was missing the 's': foreforum@foreforum.com
Dave,
I noticed that an email you sent to the forum failed and I wanted to
determine why.
The subject was Moen faucet
So here are my questions to help me track this one down so I can
continue to improve the email functions.
1) Did you reply to the forum email? Each forum email that is sent out
has a unique id in the headers that allow it to be replied to only by
the person it was sent to, its my anti spam protection. I did not see
the header in the reply that was put in the error log so thats why I'm
asking.
2) If you did reply to a forum email, George moved the post after he
made it so I might need to look into that scenario to make sure a
replied email to a moved topic gets to the right spot.
3) Were you trying to reply just to George? Barry had asked me to change
the from address in the emails that get sent. I believe Yahoo puts in
the posters email address as the from email, with a reply to as the
Yahoo board. Right now I only show the users name as the from, but the
from email is actually the forum email and not the users email. If you
were trying to reply to the user via the from email, it would go to the
forum and be blocked. I'll get this updated very soon.
Thanks,
Steve
Thanks ! ... its item 3 on the list then ... I'll get this updated tomorrow evening and see if it causes any problems with anyone.
The only downside is that it exposes the posters email address to folks who have turned on notify, but his is what Yahoo does also. I will respect the profile setting of 'allow others to email me', so if that option is not set then the from email will be foreforums and not the posters real email.
Steve & Michelle:
I second everything that Peter just said...THANKS FOR ALL YOUR HARD WORK!!! There must be a degree of LOVE mixed in with it ;D
Steve and Michelle, great work!
I have a question regarding emails. For me the one thing I like about Yahoo was the digest emails. I get lots of emails from a variety of groups and it is much easier to view and handle them all in one email or two per day in digest form.
Is there any chance that feature will appear with this format?
Jim
Jim,
Work on the daily digest continues, I have an abriged format available now and and working on an expanded version like Yahoo has.
There is a discussion of this features status here (http://foreforums.com/index.php?topic=9850.0). There has been additional progress (although slow) in the background that folks can't see just yet, I've been adding some code updates a little at a time as I don't want to break anything along the way now that we are quite a bit more active.
It begins to get scary when you start arguing with yourself, Steve...
