Title: Splendide Washer/Dryer Door
Post by: Bill & Deanne Brown on June 25, 2010, 07:38:22 pm
My wife just broke the plastic handle off our Splendide washer/dryer, Model
2100. Is there anyway to open the door and get out the wet clothes now that
the latch handle is broken off? And how can we get the door handle fixed? Has
anyone had success with 2 part epoxy?

Bill,

When mine broke, I could stick a screwdriver down into the remaining part of the handle.  By moving the screwdriver handle to the right, I could pivot the latch to open the door.

Call Splendide now as it is now not yet 5 p.m. on the west coast and order the new handle and easily install when it arrives.

I have not tried to glue it together so no help there.

You might have a newer model with a different handle than mine but..
When I noticed mine starting to crack I took an 1/8 thick aluminum plate and shaped it to bridge over the crack.  I rounded the edges, polished it, and sprayed a clear coat over it.  I took the existing handle off and then used 2 part epoxy to neatly glue it  over the plastic.

I believe they break because the seal starts to stick to the drum and the only place to pull harder is on the handle.  I now occasionally lubricate the seal with silicone spray lube to prevent sticking.  The OEM handle is really a poor design - it needs a limiter that allows excess pull force to transfer to the door itself - so I installed these little brackets to do the job.  This was all back in 2003 and I had all forgotten about it until I saw your post.

The brackets are something I found in my junk box - you'll have to use your imagination if you want to do the same.
