2nd EMS Display

My EMS (Progressive Industries) display continues to migrate. I started out with it under the bed skirt. That was fine but pretty inconvenient. Then I moved it to the wet bay so I could see the display at the same time I was plugging in. This was a big improvement, however, I still wanted an inside display (have the stock display but it is in an inconvenient location). I added that today. This seems like the best way to go. Now, I can check the electrical source when I plug in and monitor it while inside the coach. Anyhow, for anyone considering a second display, just need to buy the switching box and make up a long data cable.

The EMS device is great.  Pulled into a Florida State Park about three weeks ago and connected to the 30 amp plug.  Nothing.  The EMS display said Hot-Neutral were reversed.  I called the park office and explained what I thought was going on.  It only took a few minutes for someone to show up.  He said people had been using this site all winter, what could be wrong.  As soon as he hooked up his test gear he saw that the EMS was right.  It was a simple fix but it had been mis-wired for years.  The guy thought there might be others like that in the park.  It had been raining a lot and he told me about a guy who got a tingling when he was standing on the ground and grabbed the handle next to the door.

I'm glad to have the EMS protection.

We like our Progressive Industries EMS hard-wired 50-amp with remote display so much, we now have two EMS relays installed, one on shore cable before transfer switch, and one after transfer switch.  Both of our remote displays are in the kitchen on the 12-volt monitor panel.

I put another Progressive in before the transfer switch, too!  Great security, and we can manage AC usage when on generator as well as on shore power.  (We have an 8KW gen, so need to keep below 30A per leg.)

Like Dave & Nancy, we use our EMS display all the time to see 120-volt amps per leg. The EMS really has two different benefits. We all know it protects us from electric anomalies, but an equally important feature is the amperage display. We measure voltage from several displays, but have no other way to measure the ever important amperage. So mounting the display where it can be easily read is a good idea.

Dave, we had our first EMS on the cable after the transfer switch, so we could read generator amps. But decided to add a 2nd EMS on the shore cable into the transfer switch, when we learned someone had a shore power surge that destroyed the points in his transfer switch and fed the surge to the generator, damaging its windings.

When we were in Quartzite just getting started for Kenney's last fling, running on generator, our EMS opened on over voltage, and fortunately the EMS display kept showing the high voltage which was swinging around 160 volts. Then after a moment, the EMS would close and we were ok again. But the short high voltage spurts from the generator continued. Thinking we were starting 10 days in the desert without our generator was a problem. Having our EMS after the transfer switch allowed us to catch the generator voltage problem. A call to Power Tech let us know the voltage problem was a normal indication of a failing voltage regulator. They sent us one overnight and with removal of two screws and one plug, were back to normal.

So for us, having the EMS after the transfer switch protected us from shore & generator issues.

Just wanted to say something positive about Progressive. :D My EMS-PT50C started removing shore power stating there was issues with the power source. I checked the shorepower plug with a volt meter and the readings were fine. I then noticed water beads on the inside of the site glass and figured that might be part of the problem. I called Progressive and they confirmed the case seal had some how leaked and the unit needed to be serviced. I sent the unit back to Progressive and they repaired it no questions asked. The service invoice stated they replaced the logic board, pigtail tail, lid cover gasket, cover screw gasket, support plate and 50 amp contactor :o . It looks like a brand new unit. When they say lifetime warranty they mean it. They even paid the return shipping. A+++ to Progressive for standing behind their products and for their excellent customer service. To bad more companies don't stand behind their products like this. Thank You Progressive Industries
