Sharp 1831b and Heart 2500 is not working due to Improper Shore Power Wiring:

Improper Shore Power wiring visited our Coach.

The result is blown fuse and burnt circuit board in the Convection/Microwave oven (Sharp 1831b) and our Heart 2500 is not responding.

Looking for repair assistance/experience on both units.

Thanks in advance.

Consider installing an EMS to avoid a reoccurence. Improper pedestal wiring can wipe out everything tied into the AC. I had a close call that only popped a fuse in the inverter. Then I went out and installed an EMS, 50A hardwire with remote.

Tweetys.com Product Search EMS

I had it wired in for shore power only until recent discussions regarding protection against generator faults/fluctuations motivated me to reconnect it to protect from both shore and generator. This leaves the ATS (automatic transfer switch) a potential victim so I now check the pedestal with a voltmeter before connection.

Good luck,
Rick

I have a surge guard hard wired system in the coach. I had it on my last one too. It took the brunt of a loose neutral at the Factory one night. The Allen's in the coach next too me lost their inverter and fridge.  I had to replace my surge guard but that was it. Of course it was not FT fault but they did not take it very seriously when I told them what happened.  Finally, enough people complained and it was found to be a loose neutral at the power companies box.    It can happen anywhere and it happened at my house too. It was on the power companies side so they had to pay me to fix the AC system the oven the jacuzzi and some other stuff but they pro-rate the stuff and you do not get replacement cost.  It is cheap and effective protection.

With a portable plugged into the pedestal, you do not protect the generator input, only power coming from the pedestal.

I have gone through a similar pro vs. con exercise also.  One pro of the portable is that if you plan to change coaches, you can take it with you.  Also if it is damaged, you can remove the portable from the circuit and take your chances and plug in anyway.

If you are considering the Progressive Industries devices, I believe the 50A hardwired unit has a bypass built in that allows you to feed power to the coach with surge protection when the EMS device has a malfunction of the computer module.

At this time, I am leaning toward the hardwired 50A unit over the portable unit as I doubt if we will change coaches...or not for a long time.  Plus it looks to me like the hardwired unit has a few more features than the portable unit does and on Tweetys, they both cost the same.

I printed out the description of the hardwired Progressive Industries 50A unit and the portable 50A unit as well as a TRC 50A portable unit and did a direct comparison of the features, the pricing and the shipping costs.  If you have not already done this, I suggest it be considered.

Then I discussed various elements (features plus installation procedures) with some electrical experts since I am very electrically challenged.  As I mentioned, I am currently leaning toward the Progressive Industries HW50 unit (50A).  Now I just have to get retired so I can do the installation.

And a pro of the hardwired EMS is that you can mention it as a desirable feature if you do sell the coach  ;)

Had the same happen on last trip. Didn't want to remove it, so brought the trouble home with me.
Removed it ( no easy job for one person)
Took it to appliance repair shop. He remove three screws holding the keyboard in. Rmoved the keyboard, looked @ it.
In less that 15 minutes had it fixed, charged me $15.00. It has a cap that blows if voltage spikes. now [/u]I  know
puting it bac up there is really a two person job.l

I had my Heart inverter quit after a voltage problem.  There are a couple of very small fuses (both physical size and electrical) on the circuit board in the inverter/charger that could be blown.  If I remember correctly they are maybe 1/4 or 1/2 amp fuses.  In my case only one had to be replaced.  There is also a reboot procedure for the inverter which involves disconnecting and reconnecting the cables to the house battery.  You will have to remove the inverter from the coach and remove the cover to get to the circuit board.  If you are not skilled with electrical stuff, best to have someone who is attempt this.  Of course remove any source of electrical power and disconnect the  house batteries first before removing the inverter/charger.  Try the reboot first, and if that doesn't help, then look for a blown fuse.

I guess I am one of the few that prefers the portable surge protector. A portable will also protect the shore power cord which would cost over $200 to replace. I rigged up a simple lock to reduce the chance of theft. It is a 9" length of chain and two pad locks. I then lock the Utility compartment so the only way to steal the EMS is to cut the cable. I will post a photo of the lock setup if anyone is interested. I bought mine from Dyers RV for under $300 in November.

Howdy Kent,  I would be interested in seeing a few pics of your lock set-up for the portable surge protector.  What brand is your surge protector??

Earlier I posted a screw up, by me, where I presented our 97 295 with improper shore power.
This resulted in our Sharp Micro/Convection Oven and our Hearth Inverter failing to power up.
There were many responses.
Three responses were helpful.
Bill Chaplin's and Barry & Cindy's comment to their Oven repair, and Jerry Whitaker comment to Inverter experience.
Thank you all for your comments and inspiration to repair.
I say,"success I think", because only one test day has passed, but I wanted to post this before I
I got side tracked.

The ForeForum is a great site, thanks to all who make it possible.
