What spare parts do you need to carry??

I read where a lot of members carry spare parts when they travel. What parts should you have? Filters, Belts

Dan, No matter what parts you carry, the time will come when you need an additional part.
I carry Fuel filters, Not lube filters, V-Belt for the Kubota genset, spare D2 Governor. misc. hose clamps and a lot of junk. Some hand tools, Fluke VOM, shop rags and I gal oil.
Otherwise I will call for tire service and other service. All of my routine service and inspections are done at home in my shop where I have control of what and the quality of what is going on.

Dan,

Absolutely the most important spare to have on board is the flat hydraulic pump belt. This belt drives the pump for the radiator fan motors. I carry two spares. This belt can be fitted in 30 seconds with only a breaker bar. When the warning light goes on, you will only have 30-45 seconds or so to find a parking spot before everything shuts down. If you abuse the override button, you may damage the engine extensively (read $$$$). I have popped this belt twice, finally found the cause. Make sure the proper belt is installed. It should cover ALL the groves on both the crank pulley and the hydraulic pump. Mine has 8 grooves. You can't find this belt this wide at most Autozone, O'Reilly or NAPA stores so get one ahead of time. Order a Gates FleetRunner green stripe belt online to save about 50%. This is not a cheap belt. Detroit's take a K080450HD otherwise generically known as a 8PK1146, 26mm x 1160mm OC. You should have the belt, the breaker bar and a forehead light (for night installation) handy in one place. Practice the installation with the new belt and check the installed belt for cracks, etc.

Tip: For max belt life, use a magnetic angle gauge to check alignment of the crank pulley, tensioner and pump pulley. All three should read the same. Shim tensioner mount if off. Don't have to level rig. With the belt off, spin the tensioner to check bearing. In a GV, keep steering wheel adjusted so you can see the warning lights while driving.

I do carry alternator belts, fuel filters, oil and spare tire along with the small stuff.

Excuse me. My oversight. I should have looked the 8.2 up. I was not aware of the 4 cycle Detroit Diesel in Foretravels. What are they in?

If we carry all the stuff we might need that means A tandem covered trailer .So ,my list is short # 1 Flyswatter # 2 Cell phone , with phone # of service provider .Tongue in cheek ?--- Nope , I'am an old guy , thats all . Brad Metzger

Recommended spare parts depend on several things-- not sure there is a "one answer fits all".

1. Where are you traveling-- are parts reasonably available? Driving to Alaska or the Yucatan are very different than traveling the interstates of the U.S.

2. How much Preventive Maintenance has been performed. I find it MUCH easier to replace parts before they break at MY schedule and in my storage facility.

3. Your tolerance for waiting for parts-- some are on a very tight schedule, others on none at all.

4. Your mechanical skill. I will carry some things like the small bearings for the engine idler pulleys-- that I can install. If you don't have the skill to do so, it would be a waste of space and money.

Spares EVERYONE should carry:

1. Complete set of belts-- in fact, put on the new set and keep the old one for spares. That way you both know that you have the right size AND that the better belts are on the engine.

2. TWO sets of fuel filters. You never know when you will get a tank of bad diesel.

With these parts, there virtually no where on earth that you can not find a tech to install them if you can't do it yourself. BUT the correct parts may not be available where you are.

My most important spare is the spare transportation in the form of my Toad to get parts/motel/safety. I drove across SD once without a toad and was nervous the entire trip. Knowing I won't be completely stranded (with just a cell phone) gives me a high level of comfort. I'd really be nervous with a 5th wheel and no second motor.
