Fuel door renovation - how to make sure you don't bump fuel nozzel

Has anyone looked at how to make the fuel door renovation so that it is not easy to bump the big fuel nozzel on all that new paint?

I'm having Xtreme do the fuel door renovation and see myself bumping the fuel nozzel.  Rence and I have thought of a lot of things to do including putting a stainless bezel around the hole but I'd rather not do that since it would show (no other stainless on the coach sides) and its rather labor intensive to get a good tight fit.  (Yes, I know I could add stainless along the bottom of each door but that's not in the plan.)

Best we can come up with is to attach a heavy but flexible rubber "bib" under the fuel filler and after opening the new door, reach in and pull it out so it covers the bottom and sides of the hole.  I've seen this on some cars.  It works but its two steps.

Any other ideas?

Larry, A good point, when I was having Xtreme do my paint and mods last Nov & Dec, I had given thought to the fuel door also, but when I realized I still could not lock the door due to the LPG fuel tank requirement, I gave up on the idea.  I never thought of the effect of the small access opening and filling.
Love all the work Xtreme did and hoping Rance is still thinking about my requested mod for the upgrade air intake instead of the origional with camera.  Might bug Rance about it  ;D  :)

Larry,

I have Xtremes fuel door conversion on my coach.  My wife will tell you I do everything at 100 miles an hour, so you should not have a problem.  You might use the material that is used for the front bra around the edges. Say 2 " square. ??

As we discussed the fuel door, Rance (sorry, is it Rance or Rence?) mentioned various things folks were asking for and air intake changes was one of them.  Lots of work going on there now.

Thanks for the idea Jeff - Rance had some rubber that looks like carpet runner. He is testing how well it stands up against diesel --- so to be determined what works best.

Just a thought.  Carry a small protective rubber pad with you and slip it under the nozzle's handle.  It is an extra step, but a lot better than a chip or scratch in the paint.

Rance is spelled correctly.  And he is an outstanding and creative employee in our opinion.

That would work the same as the bib idea - just as you describe, it is an extra step.  The best solution is one that you don't notice, is automatic in its function, cost very little and does the job excedingly well.  Sort of like most things you would want on your coach, house, etc.

Thanks for the confirmation of the spelling of Rance.

I am guessing that your concern is really the bottom area of the small "fuel door" opening that could be bumped or nicked with the fuel nozzle.  I can certify that Jeff has two speeds ... 95mph and Stop.  He has not had an issue with the fuel nozzle bumping the area around the fuel door at all.  In fact, having the small door reduces the larger chance of banging the bigger bay door in tight fuel areas.  If you are really concerned, some of the clear 3M stuff that is used as a stone shield on the front of many rigs might put your mind at ease.  If it can take a rock flying up off the road, it could stand you bumping it with the nozzle.  Easy on and not too hard to remove.  But really? I wouldn't worry about it.  You'll be so happy, you will be careful.

Rance at Xtreme finished the fuel door and fabricated a rubber bib from a heavy rubber floor runner material.  It is screwed to the fiberglass fuel tank cover just under the fuel cap and is designed to be pulled out through the fuel door to be a cushion for the fuel filler nozzel.  It works perfectly for both size fillers (on the drive back from Nac this weekend, we tried both sizes).

There is so much shine on the door that you can see my skinny legs as I bend over to take the picture.  :o
