The receiver/dryer does look like it's in bad shape (may not be) from the outside because of rust, but removing it will require dumping (illegal) or evacuating all the refrigerant, about 5 1/2 lbs in a full system. And then of course it needs to be refilled. Best to wait until there is a problem with the dash air. There is usually a sight glass on the top of the rec/dryer, but you need a small mirror to see it. Bubbles in the sight glass after it has been in operation for several minutes usually indicate that it is low on refrigerant. I don't carry a spare as the generator and roof AC provide a backup for dash air. An auto parts store or air conditioning parts supply should be able to match the old one.
