Sharp Convection Oven Problem

Up till now the original Sharp microwave/convection oven has worked fine (up till now being a little less then a year for us  - in a 1996 U295).

Our problem is that the interior light will not turn off and the carousel continues to revolve.

While it is not unconciveable that this device is beyound our level of technical expertise, we have played 'blind monkey' and can't find the magic key combination to stop it.

DW says it smells 'hot'.

Anyone know the magic switch?
I can, and have unplugged the device and that does work but I don't think that is the approved solution.

I don't know the answer, but offhand it sounds like something relating to the 120v power circuit has failed internally (a relay perhaps). If it "smells hot" then something may well be cooking in there. I would stop using it and address this asap.

If you're comfortable working around electrical equipment, I would pull it out of there, remove the covers and have a look inside. It may or may not be cost effective to repair, and parts availability is a question.

Don't know the longevity of these units; mine is 20 years old and still working, for now.

I'm no expert on the Sharp microwave, but the lower panel can be removed without removing the whole unit.  About all that will do is give access to the lights above the stove top and the carousel motor.  The light and motor are on when the unit is in operation and is probably controlled by a relay.  The relay could be stuck in the on position or the contacts welded together.  If you do remove it and take it apart, you should be careful not to turn it on and have a source of uncontained microwaves that could cook your brain or start a fire.  There may be someone in Austin that can repair microwaves, I haven't checked.  Sharp might have  factory authorized repair facilities somewhere in the US.
