Cole Hersee 24124 replacement

I noticed yesterday that Cole Hersee has replaced their ubiquitous 24143 solenoid with an upgraded model, the 24213. It has the same 200 amp continuous duty specifications but now has silver tungsten carbide contacts.

This solenoid is used on a lot of Foretravels for the ignition solenoid as well as the boost solenoid. Note: the small terminals are interchangeable.

I thought I had found some good prices but Gayland in his last post has come up with what seems to be an excellent source/prices not only for this solenoid but a lot of other parts at half of NAPA prices (or less).

Here is the site he found: Truck Parts for Semi,Trailer,Heavy Duty Trucks @ RyderFleetProducts  Just type in the part number.

Note: "Steel" refers to the body not the contacts.

Followed your suggestion with solenoid Cole Hersee 24213.  Was replacing what appeared to be long used boost solenoid.  Now with the new solenoid in place all of the measurements appear to be as they should except the charge from the solenoid to the engine battery is not increased to the higher voltage incoming charge from the house battery/inverter-converter.

The old solenoid was two large lugs and one small (so only connect was wire coming from front boost switch).  The new solenoid is two of each.  The ohm meter/continuity indicated an incomplete circuit from either small lug to the case.  It does indicate continuity between the two small terminals.  To function properly it appears there needs to be a ground to the second small lug to complete the circuit to actuate the solenoid??

Does this sound like the answer?

Thank you all for the great information and untiring assistance to those of us willing but frequently without a clue  :)

Bill, You got it, run a ground wire to a reliable ground from one of the small lugs.  I had to do this on mine when I replaced the original.

Gary - thank you so much.  Really appreciate your help and will do that tomorrow so the chassis battery will get back to 12.6 vdc.

Bill,  AND... To repeat earlier advice, disconnect the batteries while changing a solenoid as grounding the positive can give you a bad burn.  Also good idea to turn inverter off while fooling with batteries. Gary B

When disconnecting batteries what is the proper procedure. Remove positive or negatives first? Wrap the ends in black tape? Cover ends with plastic bags? I remember sparking when I disconnected mine a few months back. Is that normal? Anyway to prevent? Any safety advise?

Negative off first, on last. Just be sure to isolate the negative terminal after you take it off so it doesn't touch any other metal. You can do this by wrapping the terminal in a cloth or something similar. Current flows from negative to positive and taking the positive off first is very dangerous. But, you would want to put it back on first so that when the negative is put back on, the circuit is completed.
