Has anyone used Lizardskin spray on sound deadening/insulation?

Through a gear-head friend I learned of a product called Lizardskin that is a one or two part spray on system for just sound deadening or also thermal insulation.  Its popular around here with the custom care people. The insulation on the top of my Power Tech 109 KW generator fell off and was resting on the generator long enough that it now has a permanent inpression of the top of the unit molded into the insulation. About 80 miles from me is located a shop that has the equipment to spray in both the sound deadner and then the ceramic insulation coat, and and I'm seriously considering having it done.  Anyone have any experience with this product??

I have no experience with it but Googled  it to find out more.  It certainly looks like a high quality product and worth doing as long as cost is reasonable. It also seems to be easy enough for do-it yourselfers.  Did they give you an installed square foot price?

Hummm...  was just wondering...  if I sprayed this on my drums, could I practice and not bother the neighbors?  And man...  lizard skin drums!

It appears from their website that you can purchase the stuff to do it your self but it is way more material than you would need for one generator enclosure.  Based on my enclosure size of 18 sq. ft. it would do 5 enclosures.  The sound control portion is $149, the ceramic is $164 and the applicator is $79 from Jeg's.  That's $392 without shipping.  I can get 32 sq. ft. of Barymat 1" composite foam for $133 plus shipping.  It turns out there is a place listed as a distributor that is not far from my house, I'll see what they say.

I have an appointment to have my generator cover coated with both Lizard skin products on Thursday.  The closest distribulor/dealer/applicator is about 70 miles and he will do the job while I wait. Approx cost $100.  He also said he would sell the two basic 2 gal components and the applicator gun for $350. Some of his customers have done some unusual applications for the stuff, including coating an entire house in norther NM with a white Lizard Skin. I should get the gen cover reinstalled and a test drive done over the weekend.  I'll post an update by Monday.

Dan,
      My concern would about how it will stand up to the heat in the gen compartment. Will it peel, fall onto the exhaust and burn?

Yes, and if there is a compartment fire, will it add "fuel to the fire"?  Should have a fire rating in the product specs.

The products are Class A fire rated and good to 500 degrees F.  If you have a temp of more than 500 degrees around your generator shroud, melting insulation is probably the least of your worries.  Product has been around for several years.  Go to LizardSkin® Spray-On Insulation : Lizardskin for more information.  Unfortunately I had to delay my trip to have my gen top cover sprayed for at least a week.  I'll post more after I get it done and drive the coach.  The adhesive on my old insulation gave up and the insulating "foam rubber" blanket fell down on top of the generator and melted enough to leave an expact permanent imprint in the foam.  I don't believe it was good for anywhere near 500 degrees F!!!

I went to the distributor who does classic cars and he did not think it would work well in my case since the walls of the generator enclosure are galvanized steel.  It seems that it won't stick well to that.  In addition he was going to charge $100 labor and another $100 in material.
