Questions before first trip to the mother ship..

I made an appointment for July 23rd at FOT. This will be our first visit to the mother ship. I have a few things I would like to see if I can figure out before my arrival so I can lessen the damage to my wallet.

First thing is the fast idle on my cruise has never worked and I have tried everything I can think of to get it to engage. Any ideas?

Second is that I have never heard my radiator fans run on fast speed. I even have a switch on the dash to select high on the fans but it doesn't work. Is there a way to test the device that triggers the fans to run on high?

There is another thing but I don't know if anyone has ever had this issue. When the bags are dumped and I start up and go into the travel mode the right front raises very slowly and the left front comes up much faster defeating the leveling valve and leaving the right a bit low at times. I have swapped the pressure switches and the valves. Works fine in the manual raise mode. Anyone have this problem?

That's about it. Anyone have any good advice fire away. Thanks

Mark,
Not sure your cruise is the same but for mine you slide the cruise to the on position, bring the revs up and push the button in to set it. This is while the trans is in neutral.
Good luck,
Rick

Mark,
On my 1997's SmartWheel, which is what I think you have, the instructions are as follows:
1.  Turn cruise on
2.  select "set"
3.  Hold the accelerate/resume until you reach the desired engine speed.
4.  select set/coast to reduce engine speed
5.  To turn off, depress brake pedal, or select off

Hope that helps.

Thanks Peter. I am sure I have tried that but I will follow your directions tomorrow and see what happens.
Rick thanks for the input but I have the smartwheel .

For the cruise to work on idle, the system must be aired up. It operates off of air pressure.

Not with the King Cruise/Throttle controller.  It does not use air to move the throttle.

(edit)  King uses  a servo motor

To achieve fast idle with the Smart Wheel, press the ON button for the cruise control while simultaneously pressing the RES.  To go back to idle press cruise control OFF.

I have the Smart Wheel.  Once upon a time, following the instructions seemed to have no effect in increasing idle.  Then through experimenting I learned that, in my case, if I would increase the idle just slightly with my foot and then go through the smart wheel procedure, everything works.  Press ON, then SET for a small increase, RES for a larger increase.  FWIW.

On my 1997 U320 with smart wheel the fast idle speed work that way. I first start the engine let the oil pressure go to normal, then hit cruse control on push the set  and idle speed is 850 rpm to disengage I hit brake or off cc. If I want fast idle I hit resume and get 1100 rpm. That how it was set at factory. When I had the engine computer replaced it would not work. Wen back to Cummins, they put their computer on and they set both idle speed to my request witch was factory spec. Forgot to say air pressure at that time "a few ponds".

Thanks everyone who responded to the fast idle question. I tried everything that was suggested and nothing worked. I guess I need to have cummins look at it or FOT when we get there in July. Any ideas on the other questions?

Thanks, Mark Z

If all cruise functions work except for this, I would talk to Foretravel first to see if there were any issues in the Smartwheel that could cause this. Then I would take it to Cummins.

On my non smart wheel 95 I just push the cruise button at Idle in neutral and it pops right up there. I've never tried the manual raising above that. I only use it to bring the air up a bit faster in the morning.

We have 1997 U295 with C8.3 (mechanical) engine, King cruise control, and air throttle. To operate fast idle: start engine, press cruise control on, press cruise control set, press cruise control resume/accel several times to bring speed up. Max is around 1100 rpm. Air pressure does not need to be up for fast idle to work. I use fast idle to make idle a bit smoother and to bring air pressure up more quickly. To release, press service brake or turn cruise control off.

Forrest has the King Cruise/Throttle and it works just like I said previously.  I can set the RPM's to whatever I want by holding the resume button.  I tested this today to make sure that Foretravels's instructions in the owners' manual is accurate...and it most certainly is.

Your, being a 1994, probably has a Bendix cruise control, which operated off air.  The King Controls unit does not.
