Problems with the front roof air

We've had a continuing problem with the front roof air.  It will run fine for several hours and then begin to pump out great amounts of hot air. I turn it off at the thermostat  and it continues to make a noise like it wants to start up (a bang) for several minutes after.  this started in 110 deg in Dallas but is still doing it in 85 deg in Il. After letting it rest for a long while, it works fine until the next hot air blow.  Rear is fine, thank heavens.

I'm familiar with old window a/cs that would form a block of ice on the coils in high use/high humidity but I thought that was a thing of the past.  Do I have a maintance issue or a bad unit given its a sealed unit ?  Any ideas would be much appreciated.

I would go up on the roof, remove the top cover and make sure that the drain holes are open and carefully clean out the coils that are exposed for ventilation. If they don't drain properly they will freeze up.

I assume that with that kind of heat the A/C fans are running on High...This would prevent icing up of the coil.  Perhaps the controller needs attention and is not running the fans on high.  Try the manual fan setting on high and see if it makes a difference.

Larry,
Sounds like the unit is going out on high head pressure. Gerry has the right idea, check and clean the coils to allow proper air flow and with any luck you will be good to go. You stated it right as these are sealed units, so cleaning is very important. Also when you have the unit open check the wiring as when a unit go's out on HH over and over it tends to be hard on the wires around the start capacitor and the compressor connections.

GOOD INFO!  I checked beamalarm on roof air Technical Help - AIR CONDITIONING and it would seem to confirm your advise. Now I'll see if Alice will let me go on the roof.  Thanks
