Fan in ac unit has stopped

I dread climbing on the roof but the fan has quit in my front ac unit. Compressor comes on but not the fan. Turn unit to fan only and still only hums. How much trick is it for a half blind man to change out the fan. I hope I can still get a fan for it as it is 22 years old. Would get a complete unit but she sure blows nice and cold when the fan worked. May still end up getting a new unit.

could be that the fan shaft needs some oil on it. Take the cover off and try with hand to see if it is easy to move. Put some oil on the shaft that goes to where bushings would be and move it again . Keep doing that till it revolves very easily. More than likely just has not been serviced--oiled --in a long time. I do this at least once a year on the units.
But take care, and if you do not really feel safe have a neighbour or ? go up as it is not that you need any experience to do this. Just make sure cover is fastened on properly after.

 HI Dub<
I had same problem couple weeks ago before our beach trip.

I swapped out different capacitors from front to back units, til I could cause the back unit to act the same way.    Googled defective capacitor part number replaced both  front and back units.    $29 for both run capacitors, air is working fine now.

Please confirm power is off to unit before tugging on any wires.

YMMV

10/4... I am guilty of never taking the cover off so I suppose I deserve what I get. This blasted heat of summer has given me excuse to not properly do my chores. Cooling off a bit so I will make the climb. Thanks for the input fellas.

dub,

My front unit was replaced with the new replacement Dometic Penguin unit.  You won't be happy as it's very noisy. Better to get yours fixed.

As old as mine are Keith I couldn't feel to bad over a new upgrade in units but I would certainly want and expect to be pleased after spending the money. Don't mind me asking what did the new unit cost installed. I may still have to replace. I'm hoping a new fan will fix me up but I have no real reason to feel lucky.

You have a coleman ac so do not have to worry about the dometic penquin. I had a coleman that had a frog that had gotten stuck in the fan blade and another one that had a large mud dauber nest stopping the fan from turning. I think a visual inspection will give you the information you need

This wind from Issac has the temp down in the barn so I am going up top. It has just been to hot to go up top since she stopped spinning. Some fried frog legs would be nice but I can think of no use for a dirt dobber.
