Javelin flip up monitor strips a gear - anyone ever work on the gears?

There's been discussion on what to replace the Javelin monitor with but I can't find any discussion about repairing it.

Has anyone ever worked on the gear mechanism?

Mine seems to have a striped gear in that it doesn't flip down all the way when it is turned off.  I can GENTLY manually move it so that it will retract but that is a real PITA.  Also it has always wanted to retract when I hit a big bump (the on/off switch must be defective) and now it seems to be doing that more.

That's probably a loose connection or a bad splice.  We've had that problem twice and each of those was a problem.
