Transmision High Temp Light

Hello I have a 96 u320 with a M11 and 4060 Allison, my high trans temp warning light and beeper have been coming on and off going down the road or sitting still. The trans temp gauge reads about 180 and when I apply the retarder it raises to about 200 then backs off. Both engine and trans temp gauge run about dead even at 180 under normal driving. I changed fluid and filters in the trans no change with problem. When I check the trans shifter with the up and down arrows it goes through the count down and shows no errors and OK. I only found one external sensor on the cooling line elbow I unhooked it and my trans temp gauge didn't function. Is there another sensor external or is it internal?  Any help would be appreciated thanks Frank

Although we have different engine/transmission combinations, your temperatures on the gauges are very close to what we run. 185/185 on the road with 200/200 on grades. Would check for a second sending unit in the engine compartment for a loose or damaged connection.
