Campgrounds NYC area

Will be traveling to NYC to visit the San Gennaro festival in Little Italy and the World Trade Center memorial as well as a trip to Lng Island around West Babylon area.  I plan to stay at Liberty Harbor for the Manhattan tour but having difficulty finding a campground for the Long Island stay.  Hoping someone can help with this.

NOt much for our sized rigs out on the island. There is a couple county parks with no hookups but I wonder about the size restrictions.

Try some research, but looks tough.  You may check on churches, marinas, or even shopping centers depending on how long you need to be there.

If you do find one, be sure to stay off anything labeled "Parkway" in New York State.  Only passenger cars are permitted on those (and in many cases, taller vehicles won't fit beneath the low clearance overpasses).

"Lawn G'island" is challenging enough in a car; I can't imagine driving a motorhome there.

Yes, there is only a few roads you can drive out.  You have to use Expressway.  THe LIE infact will get you out there. It is tight with truck traffic on narrow lanes but you can get out on the island.  I do not know of a campground we can fit in. I took my 24 foot Born Free last time and that was tight.

We haven't yet tried it, but I have heard that Liberty Harbor RV Park Liberty Harbor RV Park in New Jersey works extremely well when visiting the NYC area.

Liberty Harbor is a fine place to stay to go to NYC.  If you want to go out on the Island though you are looking at a long trip with the traffic.

I was at Lazy Days today in Tampa and saw a 2010 American Eagle that tried to go under a 12' 6" bridge at 50 mph in New York somewhere, only trouble was he was 12' 10" tall, pretty well cleaned off air conditionersm sat dish, awning and anything else on top of the coach. Pays to know how tall you are and watch the signs.

I guess that is a big opps.... FOr you people not familiar with the east coast there are oval shaped bridges that have different heights depending on your lane.... The right side is much shorter than the middle or left.  In fact a commercial bus had a problem not long ago in the DC area.

Additionally, motorhomes (called "house coaches" by the Parkway system) and a number of other vehicle types are not permitted on the parkways.  New York State Parkways Rules and Regulations

                        I don't usually speak of this but a few years ago coming home from the south with our previous Class C coach I let the GPS steer me onto the Merritt Parkway which runs from NYC to Connecticut during rush hour. The first bridge we encountered said 9'6", we were 10'4". I put on my left blinker and centered in the 2 lanes and prayed.
        We got through 3 bridges that way before we found an exit. I now have a truckers GPS and always check the routes.

No need to stay in NYC. You can stay way down in PA and ride Amtrak into NYC and back in no time. When I lived in State College PA people used to get on Amtrak in Lewistown PA and go to a Broadway musical, dinner, and back to PA all in the same evening. Amtrak owns the rails on the east coast so they have the right of way. All the freight trains have to yield to them. They cruise at about 80 mph in some places. It's much faster than flying or driving. I would look for a campsite with easy access to an Amtrak station to go to NYC.
