Shurflo 4048

Does anyone have a 4048 installed with accumulator tank still inline?  The instructions state the tank isn't necessary, but they also don't say it HAS to be removed.  Just curious as I'm thinking of installing the new one I got and just not bothering to take the tank out.

My own preference is to leave the accumulator tank in the system even if a pump doesn't require it. We installed the variable speed Aquajet ES pump and left the accumulator in place. The system has worked well.

You may want to search the forum for previous discussions regarding accumulator tanks in the fresh water system.

J D,

Does your pump shut off' with 'burps' with the accumulator tank in place?

Nope! After we turn off a faucet or finish flushing the toilet, the pump will slow down as pressure builds, then just stop. There are no burps, sounds of a motor straining, or funny noises.

We don't use accumulators for health reasons, but using an accumulator will not hurt any type of water pump.

We removed our accumulator many years ago and have been happy with our Shurflo 4048 water pump for over one year. Our accumulator also took a lot of space, so removing it opened up our water pump area.

In our '97 U-320, the accumulator is readily accessible, but the Shurflo pump is behind the AquaHot heater and not readily accessible. How much trouble is it to get to the pump and remove it? I would like to install a Shurflo 4048 where the accumulator tank is mounted. If the current pump fails on the road, we might have a serious problem.

Since your water pump is hard to get at, you may consider temporarily plumbing in a new pump in a different area. A switch would keep your original pump offline.

For several years this is what we did because our original pump was way back in a corner. When we later had a problem with the new pump, I was able to bring the original pump back to life and put our new pump offline until we replaced the new pump.

We put in a 4048 in June. I didn't like the way it worked without an accumulator so I put a new accumulator in and much prefer the function with the accumulator. However, the 4048 failed in August. It started making weird noises and then quit shutting off altogether. We had to turn it off and on with the switch. We put the old one back in with the new accumulator and it is working fine. The 4048 is going back for a refund now that we are back home.

My experience with these "sophisticated" water pumps is that they like neither accumulator tanks nor RO systems. I had one on my RO system in the fifth wheel, it worked for a while but then it would not shut off. Called the company and they told me they did not recommend its use with either an RO system or accumulator tank. FWIW I prefer a cheap on demand pump with an accumulator tank. In the fifth wheel we had a seven gallon accumulator tank, wish we had room in the coach for one that large.
