New Atwood 10 Gal Water Heater LP/Electric with Motor Aid

Hello all, in preparing for the reassembly (soon, I promise!) of all the utility compartment components including the water heater, we are replacing our 10 gallon Atwood water heater with a new one. These new Atwood water heaters have DC thermostats and ECO's that are front mounted as opposed to the old style. The newer ones use a relay to turn on the A/C heating elements remote controlled by a switch. Our new water heater came with a new switch assembly that includes separate switches for the gas and electric portions of the water heater. This makes a slightly different wiring set up. There is one additional orange wire coming from the front control board which goes to the switch which controls the A/C relay to turn on the heating element. So my question is, for those who have installed a new Atwood water heater that has the relay set up for the A/C heating element, did you run an additional wire up into the coach for that switch? I have done some luminaria Tamsett tracing down the routing of the wires to go to the water heater switch that is just in front of the sink, but it is quite a spaghetti nest... I am thinking that a new switch wire would need to be fused so that the relay is protected against shorts. I also figured that I will leave the original AC water heater switch that is at the base of the bed platform, so that there would be two switches that would both need to be turned on in order for the A/C heating element to work... I suppose I could use one of the unused fuses that are in the baggage compartment underneath the fiberglass cover, but the routing would be simpler by including an in-line fuse with the new wire so that I can just run the wire the most convenient route to the water heater. I would certainly be interested in hearing any and all suggestions and/or experiences regarding this new style water heater installation.
Thanks. Don

I just wired the switch locally using the same 12 v feed for the propane control as a control wire for the 110... So I can turn on propane and electric at the same time. after it comes up to proper temp it tend to cycle on the electric and the propane hardly runs at all. If I don't want the 110 I just cut off the switch under the bed.

@acousticart Thanks for bringing this up. I replace mine several month ago and just wired up the switch and capped off the orange wire. Needless to say it didn't work. Haven't had time to dive back into so it been propane only.

@Dave Thanks for the fix! I was going to have FOT look at it since I'm having other work done. Instead I'll probably just do your fix at camp foretravel! (If we ever meet I'm going to be really disappointed if you don't look exactly like Eric Clapton!)

Thanks Dave,
That is a simple solution that sounds like it would serve the purpose! My only concern would be that the fuse that protects the propane control wire is adequate to also handle the heating element relay. My guess is that there isn't much current required and that the exsiting circuit breaker or fuse would be fine. Still, that is an empirical question that I can probably look up the answer to... Guess I just need to find the circuit breaker or fuse and see what it is rated for and then find the current requirements of the A/C element relay and the propane control valve. But since I already have the utlity compartment gutted, I am going to take advantage of the center tunnel access to run several "just in case" wires and use one for the relay.

Also, expect to buy the adjustable thermostat for it. Way too hot! Also cuts way back on cycle time!

I did a search on the new style Atwoods and fund that several have mentioned installing, but I wasn't able to find any posts that answered my question... I am glad that this is a timely subject for you!

I saw that these adjustable thermostats were available and was wondering about that... Is your thermostat in the front of the water heater like ours is? I was thinking I could do the upgrade after the install since I can get at it from the front.

I'm still trying to learn about the workings of my coach.
I read the reference to the red illuminated switch that's mounted to the foot of the bed. My belief was that switch was for the engine block heater. I have never used this switch. Does this switch actually activate the heating element in the hot water heater?
I have not been able to get the hot water heater to work with the electric element to heat the water. Could it be this simple that all I have to do is flip the switch on the bed pedestal?

I have a Primus heat system and assumed that on the Primus control board the buttons to turn on electric heat as 800w or 1600w was controlled entirely by the Primus controls. I also assumed that this controlled the electric heat for hot water at the taps.

Sorry for the thread drift!

Your coach is a special build with a version of AquaHot that Foretravel was evaluating, or a customer wanted. The illuminated switch on the passenger side on my 95 does indeed supply the electric element in my water heater. It could be connected to something...

Its my understanding that the lighted red switch is typically for an engine heater, not an electric water heater. Since yours is a 95 my bet is on the engine block heater even though you have the Primus. Check under the bed for a 110v electrical receptacle on the firewall on the drivers side. See if there is an electrical wire plugged into it that runs back along the engine compartment on the drivers side. If so, it is probably an engine block heater.

Easy way to tell is to raise your bed and plug in a light bulb to the 110V outlet just under the bed. Flip the lighted red switch and the light (or any other appliance) should come on. Block heater will be plugged into this outlet. (follow the cord to the block heater)
