Tuneup a 8.2 DD Turbo-charged V8??

Is there anything besides changing the oil and cleaning or replacing the air filter to be done to this engine? Any other things an "above average idiot" can do that might prolong life or MPG of this engine? (not including driving habits, vehicle loads, tire pressures, etc)
I have built gas engines, a nitro-burning rail, snowmobile engines, etc but no experience with diesel engines and have not seen anything relative to either improving or checking the efficiency of a diesel engine. Obviously on a gas engine one can change timing, plugs, plug wires, compression ratio,etc. But what about diesels?

No first hand knowledge of the DD 8.2, but check an see if it has mechanical valves like most large diesels. If so, check valve adjustment.

Were it me, I would go find an old-timer at a DD dealership and ask their advice.

Thanks Brett, but I are an "old-timer" and our Kenworth dealer and the Cummins dealer have nothing but "young squirts" working there. BUT, I will keep trying to find a working Old F**T but I think most of them were smart enough to retire as soon as they could.

No. A VERY different engine. 8.2 liter V8 Four Stroke (not Two Stroke).

First off... If someone tells you that that no nothing of this engine or that is is a piece of junk.. leave! This is a good engine and all it really needs is regular servicing. If you have a heavy equipment shop nearby or a local freight company they may possibly be able to tell you where to seek service. A valve adjustment and setting the injectors is the only "tune-up" that can be done to this engine. If your anywhere Knoxville TN, Waters equipment co. has a very good detroit man that actually likes the 8.2l engine.

The website has been shut down that specialized in the DD 8.2. They had the answers to a lot of 8.2 quirks along with some special tools needed. Would suggest you search other forums for more info. Quite a few boats had this engine.

Excessive wear on internal components. Blow by. Would not bid much for used ones and they were my product.
