Old Coach, New TV Upgrade

We have always enjoyed watching TV, but when we started full-timing in our U300 in 2005, we really missed our big-screen.  About six years ago we replaced the Foretravel's original 20" CRT TV with a 27" Toshiba.  We accomplished this by removing the drawer and frame below the TV cavity and mounting the TV on the bottom side of the sliding floor board.  For viewing, it props against the front old TV cavity and wedges neatly under the sliding tray above.  When traveling, we fold it away in the old drawer space.  The space once taken by the old CRT TV now houses a multifunction printer/scanner and a DVD player, together with ample space for wire management.

A few days ago, the old Toshiba gave up the ghost.  Fortunately, we happened to be at a Wal-Mart in Marshall, Texas.  I'd been researching upgrades, and found a 32" Samsung model that just fits in the available space.  All we had to do was walk into the store and make the purchase.  With a few modifications, we were able to use all of the old mounting hardware, which consisted of aluminum angle brackets, screws, bolts, washers, and wing nuts.

If your old Unihome needs a TV upgrade, consider making a few modifications between the front seats and picking up one of the new-generation ultra-compact 32" flat screens.  Let me know if you'd like more details, and I'll be happy to share my experiences.

Larry,
Thanks for sharing your TV modification.  It shows there's many ways to skin this cat.  And yes, the new LED back lit TV's are thinner than a slice to white bread...marvelous.  I think that with the low weight these can even be mounted with HD velcro material anywhere...on a wall even.

Speaking of the velcro Peter, we just purchased a Samsung 40" LED Smart TV, so nice, been thinking of replacing the Sony 26" that is presently mounted in the coach.  The velcro gave me a thought then a laugh, the new TV is 16 lb, but velcro might not be up to the task?

Dave,
I'm talking about the HD velcro...the same that is used for the Ramco mirror installations.  I bought mine a long time ago when Costco had them available...not any more though.  Maybe an online search can reveal a few sources for this HD velcro.

The nice thing about HD velcro is that it has great shear strength (slide along the wall when using it to hang something like a TV), but somewhat low tensile strength (pull out for removel).  The HD velco's adhesive is very aggressive stuff.

Looks great! I am going to redo my tv in my U300 this march and just by chance I bought a thin 32" Samsung....fits great. Foretravel is going to do the install and build a cabinet around it....sure makes a difference!
