Tioga Pass Crossing

Does anyone have experience driving a 40ft with trailer over 120 CA through Yosemite Park?  We are looking to cut off miles by crossing through the park but are concerned about the road conditions and our length.  Is it better to avoid this cut through and take the long way around??  Thanks!  Faith

The last time we did it I decided I'd rather not do it again. 40ft U320 towing a Honda Element.

It's doable, but not a pleasure.

Go North on US395 to Carson Pass CA88. Much nicer crossing.

Much less stress on gluteus maximus ;o)

Well if you do it be sure to look over the edge at the cars and trucks in the canyon below, they didn't make it.

Faith, I drove it last year with a 36 and a toad.  In my opinion it was worth it, beautiful drive, lots of curves and narrow places.  I was fortunate that there was very little traffic and we enjoyed the ride.  I would do it again anytime. With proper use of rertarder and brakes and patience it is no problem.

It's almost in our backyard. It's closed for the winter now so keep checking on conditions. Coming down toward Lee Vining, it has a few tight turns at the top but changes to more gradual turns shortly. If you know your rig, you should not have any problems. Just don't be in a hurry to get to the bottom and drop a few gears as you start down.

Would not make an early morning decent until temps come up and the ice melts. That could be exciting!

Great views with places to pull over for foto ops.

Agree with Doug & Pierce.  If I remember correctly it is not normally open until Memorial Day or later.

Thanks for the advice.  We looked at I-80 heading east from San Fran also and thought about doing some sightseeing in Utah and Colorado.  Wouldn't be doing this until early June so the Sierra's should be free of ice and snow by then (I hope).  Anyway, thanks again for the help:)    Faith
