Brake Rotor Cracked

I had new rear tires installed today and while the wheels were removed I inspected the brakes and noticed the outboard rotor on the left and right wheel were cracked.  According to the Meritor service manual cracked rotors should be replaced.  I have found a part number at  Brake Replacement Cost on a 2000 U320 (for a 2000 U320)  #3218Y1065.  Is that number a good number for my 1997 U295?  What price range including labor am I looking at to replace the rotors?

I have a note that the number you show is for the front rotors. My number for the rears is 3218K167 at $265.
Check here: 3218K167-MERITOR-BRAKE ROTOR
and you should make sure this is for your model. I think it is correct for ours.

Four years ago those rotors were $350 each. Can't remember labor costs. How were the pads? Unless in really good shape, they should probably be replaced at the same time. I think my pads were $200/pair, but not positive. I think you are looking at close to $1500; just a guess.

The previous owners of our coach told us that they had just replaced the rear rotors and pads, to the tune of about $4000! That may have been a mobile service outfit, though, which might have a higher cost than taking the coach to the service place.

Thanks for the info. I called FOT and they verified that number is correct for my coach.

Previous owner had complete brakes done July 2011 in Houston. Service order shows front and rear rotors, pads, seals, and slack adjusters. $6479.34!. The adjusters were $647 of the total parts, don't know how much of the $2800 total labor was for adjusters. They charged $800 parts for front rotors, $920 for rear rotors.

I had rear rotors replaced on SOB. Tech showed me cracking on all four rotors but only rears had severe cracking. Said cracking up to a certain point is acceptable per manufacturer. You might want to have somebody experienced with Meritor brakes take a look and verify cracking is enough to warrant replacement.

A month ago I replaced both rear rotors and my cost was 256 each.  This was from Fleetpride Trucks parts a nationl truck parts store.

This is the rotor from the drivers side.  The cracks look worse than they appear in the photo.  I ended up changing out rotors and pads on both rear wheels.

     Wow , some one rode the brakes a lot . Why didn't the retarder come into play ? Must have had it turned off .Takes a bunch of heat to do that, over a period of time .    Brad Metzger

Yes, someone could have ridden the brakes to long/hard OR they could have not lubed the caliper slide pins (a common problem) and the pads did not retract off the disk when the service brake was released.

Have them lubed with the correct clay-based grease and install the Bendix helper spring kit.

I think the rotors had been cracked before I purchased the coach.  I agree the "retarder" should help to keep this from happening in the future.

         On my first Foretravel , I put 132,000 miles on it and at the time I sold it , the pads and rotor looked nearly new . On my next coach put 64,000 on it , same thing.    Brad Metzger

Take a good look at the slack adjusters also, I can't prove it but I believe that a bad slack adjuster was the cause of my burning off the left brake pads and cracking from heat the right rotor.
