The industrial, marine version of the automotive engines is mostly around the use of forged crankshaft, pistons,  in place of the standard use of cast parts.  Some models use extra external ribs cast into the block.  Marine version also uses the brass freeze plugs in stead of the steel plugs.

Then you get into the distributor, carb/intake, cam, even water pump, heads and valves.
Taking your typical automotive engine from the junk yard will not  be a enjoyable experience if used in a heavy vehicle or boat.
We use many industrial Ford, GM, International Harvester and years ago used Chrysler industrial in our generator (industrial) engines.  Same for boat use, the auto engine will most likely not get you out of sight of the pier before you find the weakness design.
Another way of thinking, industrial engines are designed for constant heavy loading, auto engines are designed for power & coast (recover cooling).
This is what we have been taught by the factories involved.
Cheers

It may or not be possible, but if you are having trouble locating a rebuilt industrial, could you have yours rebuilt and reinserted?  I also have heard on the forum the desire to remove the 460 and place a 7.3 diesel in its spot.  I would have a hard time justifying this if the 460 were in good shape.  But a blown engine, I would certainly consider this option.  This would probably give you a little more power and a little better mileage.  The question then would be the generator. Gasoline gen would be an issue.  Propane would be better to make the switch.  Either way, good luck to you.

Forgot to mention,  the rebuilder that does not know the difference between th auto & industrial should be avoided .  That is a truly amazing comment, goes to show the different quality of business we run into. :o

And yes, if you have the skill, tools to swap to the Power Stroke 7.3 prior to the computer version would be sweet,  Think Pierce has some sperience with area.

The problem with putting in a 7.3 diesel would be in the rpm as the 86 was geared pretty low so the engine would be running about 4,000 rpm at 65 mph. I don't think the 7.3 would like that. I know the 460 did not like it to much either. I changed quite a few while working at foretravel in Tampa

Agree to the high rpm, one would have to change the ring & pinion, a normal standard change,  Would guess a 4.11 could be a start, no idea of the tire size, but easy to figure.
Always things to play with. Lot of fun.
I think the Turbo 7.3 1994 would be the year for non electronic and O/D Ford transmission or hook up to a 545 Allison 4 speed, lots of considerations,  a nice good project.
