King Control problem

If anyone has had King Control problems please let me know what type of symptoms you experienced.
I am having a problem with the following intermittent symptoms:
1. only able to get 1700 RPMS going up a slight hill.
2. starting from red-light would not shift out of first, RPMS 1200 max,  then it would finally shift to second.
3. after I finally got the FT home I checked the transmission for codes--none showing all looked good
4. let the FT cool down for an hour, went for a short ride, all went good 1800 RPMS, stopped at a red light and the same problem again.
5. called MOT and King Controls and the consensus not the transmission but probably the King Controller. What kinda money for a rebuilt King unit?

Any ideas would help.

Call kingncontrol @  507-334-0230 He can help you diagnose if it is control.  Fuel restriction?  Solenoid or filter?

If King Control board cannot see a working ground circuit through brake lamp bulbs, it will not accelerate above minimum RPM.

King Control manages cruise control and on our vehicle also throttle control.  Because King Cruise Control needs to turn off when brake lights come on, it wants to be sure it is connected to brake light circuit, so it has a wired connection to the wire that goes to rear brake lamps.  If some reason it cannot see a ground, because of wire connection problem or brake bulb filament burned out, or brake bulbs missing, etc, there will be limited throttle.

We also had the same limited throttle when our fuel shut-off solenoid only partly opened due to a problem solenoid.  Replacing the fuel solenoid fixed our throttle problem.

King Control web site has problem solving support pages.  He is very helpful and if needed, you can send him your board or buy a new board.

A selling point in the advertisement for the coach we bought three years ago was "air throttle." I asked about it. The story was that the throttle failed in California. The owner flew "his" mechanic from Houston to California on the company jet. Owner and wife few home on the company jet, and the mechanic drove the coach back to Texas using a rope from the engine compartment to the driver's position to control the engine. Same story was told by the mechanic and the owner's wife.

To the best of my knowledge, the cruise control is still the King Control and it has always worked well for us. The manual throttle (accelerator) is an air throttle that also works well. My understanding is that the King Control in the 1997 U295 tended to develop problems. Other reports on this forum indicate that the problems can be resolved.

The generator autostart (Genwizard) for that year was also likely to fail. It had been removed from our coach by the previous owner.

We were in Minneapolis Minnesota area years ago and stopped to meet King Cruise owner Steve. He checked out our throttle/cruise box circuit board and found a discolored spot on the board, probably from an overheated connection. We decided to replace box and we have been running just fine for many years since that preventative measure. Steve checked out everything else, put a new gasket on box cover and we were happy we stopped. Steve makes new boards and does not rebuild boards.

Early motorhomes came with air throttles. Lael King saw a market for an electronic cruise control for diesel engines and as owner / inventor of King Control, he created a cruise control for motorhome manufacturers, that became very popular and was used in most motorhomes at that time. It did not take long for manufactures to turn to Lael to see if he could integrate electronic fly-by-wire throttle control in with his Cruise Control. After all, his box already controlled throttle for cruise, so why not add a few circuits and also control throttle from accelerator pedal. King was dominate for several years until engines started to add electronics and include their own throttle controls. Without the throttle business, King invented the automatic King Dome satellite antenna and the rest is history. Lael, concentrating on automatic satellite antenna business sold the throttle business to his key employee Steve Boller, who moved to his own location and has improved & created a first class cruise control product for trucks and older diesels.  Steve owns and operates Cruise King, which basically is the only product on the market to replace older non-supported throttle controls when they fail.

Steve knows EVERYTHING about our King Control and something rare these days, fully supports our older throttles with reasonably priced new parts and lots of free support.

Steve at King Control and I worked on a similar problem when I first installed my King Control. For my Cat 3116 it seemed that the return springs were so strong that the King control throttle cable takeup reel could not overcome the return springs over 1700 rpm. I designed and installed an extension throttle arm that replaced the one Steve supplied that moved the cable connect point out about an additional inch. That seems to have completely solved the problem. Ask Steve if that might be  your problem and if he agrees he can feel free to share my design.

Working with Steve to resolve a problem is a joy.

Called Steve at King Control and we decided to remove my unit and send it to him for rebuild.  I am taking his advice and checking all grounds to the system. Does any one know of a list and location of the grounds that I need to check?  Also decided to change both fuel filters just to be sure.

On thing I had not seen listed as a possibility for low power and low RPM is lack of turbo boost. If I recall correctly, if turbo boost is low the Cummins will not rev up and certainly has reduced power. This is most often a CAC (intercooler) leak, exhaust gasket failure or a exhaust plumbing leak. Just a thought.

Before I called Steve at KC I took the FT for a test ride just to be sure.  I had a friend raise the bed and ride in the back while I drove around.  The FT ran great- shifted fine and RPMs would go to 2000.  I drove 20 miles with no problem.  The reason we decided to send the KC for a rebuild is the unit makes a loud grinding sound and is sometimes jerky in operation.  I hate intermittent problems.  Any other ideas?

Larry Bradley's above posting has the incorrect phone number for Cruise King Control...

Cruse King Control office phone number is 507-334-0230.

If someone could change Larry's posting it could eliminate a future mis-dial.
