Transmission problem 3060R Allison

On our way home from the Grandvention, between Knoxville and Nashville notice the temp being erratic on the reading it would bounce between 140 and 180 and when going down a grade with the retarder engaged it would go down instead of up.  This went on for several miles and finally the guage doesn't read anything.  Every thing seem to shift OK.  Sometimes it feels as like it is under a load when pulling a grade, also with the retarder off on a down hill it feels as if the retarder is on.  Called Allison, they gave me names of shops in Nashville, All closed until Monday.  Anybody else ever had this problem or have a opinion, you can reach me at 214-762-6290.  We made it into Nashville and are at the Two Rivers RV Resort.

Jimmy,

Three things-- use the shift pad to check for diagnostic codes.

Check fluid level AND pull the dipstick to check smell and color of fluid.

Check the transmission temperature sender wire and make sure it is clean and tight (as I recall it is on the line from transmission at the radiator/transmission cooler end).

Could be a gauge issue, could be a sender issue, could be a transmission issue.

Brett, thanks for the reply.  I received a phone call from Rudy L. he had the wire come of his 96.  I got under the coach and that what I found, a wire hanging down, clean the ends and reattached it and crimped the end.  Hope it doesn't come off again.  Fluid looks good, clean and no burnt smell.  Will take it out of the park for a test drive and hope all is well.

Rudy, Thanks for the phone call

Now on the way to NAPA to pick up a belt, one was worn on the edge.

Thanks again guys.
