1997 U320 Ceiling Fan

Has anyone added a ceiling fan above the bed.....to a 1997 U320?  If so, would you share the process?

We have a ceiling fan in our 1997 U295. It came with the coach, so I can't give specifics about installation. The motor housing is mounted directly to the ceiling rather that being suspended like most installations in S&B homes.

The fan is a 120VAC unit. I don't know if 12VDC units are available. The motor on ours is very noisy when running on the Freedom 25 inverter. There is some sound from the motor when running on shore power or generator, but we don't find it to be annoying.

Ours is near the foot of the bed. It can be hazardous to the hands when dressing or undressing with any "over the head" garments. It's easy to get whacked on the hand if you lift your hand very high. We like the gentle air movement that the fan provides. It's also good for drying clothing or linens that are hung up or laid out in the bedroom.

It is good to know it is possible!!!!  We also like the air movement at night and good to know about clothes drying options.  Thanks for the heads up about the overhead hazards.

Howdy John,  I installed a 12vdc 36" Ceiling fan in our '00 U320.  I powered from a 12vdc source in the over-the-bed-cabinets.

This is a cut/paste from a previous post:
noticed you mentioned a noisy 120vac ceiling fan.  We installed a 12vdc ceiling fan to avoid the noise issue.  When dry camping I often turn off the inverter at night to extend battery life, so a 12vdc fan works out great.

Here's a link: 12V Remote Ceiling Fan Brass/Oak 36"
Kind of pricey, but works great.  We stained the oak blades to match our walnut interior.

Good Luck, Dave A

A noisy/humming ceiling fan operating on your inverter but not nearly so loud on shore/gen power, usually indicates you have a modified-sine wave inverter. That type will create more heat in the fan's motor and eventually risk burning it out. These fans draw very little current at 120 volts so you might consider a small, separate sine wave inverter for the fan or eventually upgrade to full sine wave whole house inverter.

I put in a 42" 110v ceiling fan with a close mount.  If you call James Triana at FOT with your coach number he can send you a copy of the ceiling plan for your coach.

Your coach maybe different from mine.  Here is what I did (very carefully).

On my 2001 U320 36' there is a 12"x24" layer of plywood (actually two layers of 3/8 plywood, the 24" length oriented is front to rear) centered in the ceiling section over the bed.  The fan should be mounted pretty much in the center of this area.  There is a 1/2" PEX tube that runs down the middle of the backside of the plywood and then over to TV cabinet on the passengers side.  The PEX tube was accessible in the ceiling of the TV cabinet.

Once I picked a spot I used a 1-1/2" hole saw to start cutting into the plywood.  Once you get the hole started make sure the pilot drill is retracted as much as possible or removed.  You don't want to put a hole in the roof. If you take the pilot drill out, be very careful continuing the drilling to prevent it from jamming or turning out of the hole.  A battery powered drill has less torque and may be easier to control.  Mark a 3/4" depth on the side of the hole saw and stop when you get to that depth.  The plywood is glued to the layer of foam (1/2"-3/4" thick) between the plywood and the coach roof.  Pry the plywood off of the foam once you are through the plywood.

Once you get through the plywood you will find the PEX tube.  Cut through it carefully.  Once you gain access to an open end of the PEX tube you can push a electrical wire fish tape through to the TV cabinet area.  I cut an orange round 16ga 3 wire extension cord to the appropriate length keeping the male end intact to plug into the outlet in the TV cabinet.  I pulled the other end of the extension cord through the PEX tube.

A shallow electrical box is mounted to the ceiling.  The electrical cord comes through the box.  The fan base mounts to the box.

I would have purchased a Casablanca fan but couldn't find one at 42" (about as big as you can fit in there) that wasn't white.  They are the quietest fans you can get.  The one we used makes a bit of motor noise but not much.

We find having the fan turning so that air is pulled up into the fan and then down the sides of the bedroom more effective for the fan we have and the close distance to the ceiling.  Moving air makes sleeping much more comfortable and reduces the amount we use the AC.

It was not hard to do once you get up the courage to cut a hole in your ceiling.  It took two or three calls to FOT to get the level of detail that I felt I needed but they were helpful.

We felt that a ceiling bedroom fan in such a close area could be the cause of an injury or distraction, when doing physical activities. So we put a table fan on a new shelf mounted in the corner of the bedroom, and find it works very well to move air about the room.

We have never hit the ceiling fan blades that we can recall and I think we would remember. We have hit the little chain dangle thing on occasion.

We also have a small fan that we can move around in the LR area.  Air movement is good.

I added one above the bed in our 2002 U320.  Ours is centered in the recessed area above the bed.  It has greatly added to the air circulation in the bedroom especially in the warmer months. Since our ceilings are not of the 9 foot type of course the blades seem to be a bit close when standing. However, I'm 6'2" and have yet to hit the blades.
It is one of the nicest upgrades we added to our MH.  I purchased a "flush mount" type from the local HD and had MOT install ours. I find our fan to be very quiet.  I'm not that light a sleeper to notice any hum.

Yup! It is the OEM Freedom 25. Still works as an inverter and does a good job maintaining the batteries. We'll put in a better inverter/charger system when the Freedom 25 fails. We seldom operate on inverter. We avoid using any devices that don't like the square wave when the inverter is operating.

Dave Abel's find of the 12VDC ceiling fan looks like a great idea to me.

Regarding placement, if you place it so that the blades never extend beyond the edge of the bed, you are less likely to contact the blades while standing on the floor. You should assess your own vulnerabilities for areas over the bed. Fan rotation on ours is reversible, and we always direct air upward from the fan blades.

We have really enjoyed the two 12V Hella fans that George installed under the overhead cabinets on either side of the bed - they have been very effective for air movement/cooling:  Hella Fans in the bedroom

And on laundry day:  Mounting a Ceiling Fan

I hated that ceiling fan in our 320. I always envisioned sitting bolt upright in the middle of the night and decapitating myself. On this rig, we went for the Hellas and now I only have to worry about finger contusions and amputations.

In regards to using the ceiling fan for drying the clothes, how do you go about making sure the fan is properly balanced to run while the clothes are hanging on it? ;D ;D

Do you use clothes hangers or what to make them stay there if the fan is on high??

sorry, couldn't resist

Drill holes in the blades so the hangers will fit. You may need to augment with zip ties. Keep lots of coins to go into pockets of appropriate items so that everything is balanced. Problem with my idea is that bride takes the coins and goes to the laundromat to wash/dry/fold everything.

Tested our ceiling fan today. Wife was cleaning in the S&B house at nap time. I went to the coach and took a nice nap under the ceiling fan. There was no laundry hanging on it, so it was well balanced, quiet, and didn't whack me with fabric and buttons. ZZZZZ!

Oh, I don't know about that!  This works for those without a ceiling fan - but with the Hella fans to either side:  :P

But Pat, you have one of those fancy NEW coaches with the built in hanger rods in the ceiling. All we have are cabinet door knobs. :'(
