Slide Room Retract Problem

My front slide room seems to extend with no problems.  When I retract the room, it comes in just fine.  Then the problem starts.  It seems like the pins are not getting extended on the first try.  It appears to cycle 5-10 times before it finishes and then the red light goes off.  Anybody have any suggestions on where I might start looking.

As a little background, the bladder was replaced at HWH last May and FOT replaced several solenoid valves in the basement that were seeping from the electrical connection end.

Any insight would be appreciated,

Rich

I heartily recommend that you use this contact form for HWH.  That is what I did to start on my trek to solve my slide problem.  They responded within a day to my initial request.  It seems much easier than phone calls to them.  HWH Contact Page

I haven't had lock issues, knock on wood.

It appears as though none of the RV manufacturers or specialty manufacturers can come up with a simple reliable slide out assembly for an RV that will not cost an arm and a leg to repair, etc, etc, etc.
Good luck with your repair,
Rick

+1 with Brad.  I have chatted with HWH on several occasions and their tech people are TOP NOTCH, in my opinion, and have solved a couple of issues - a blown fuse and bad sensor.  Good luck with your issue.

I believe HWH produces most of the slide mechanisms for the RV Industry and produce may different types of slides for many different companies.  In our case, a 2002,  we are having some issues with Slide Creep - worn out/overworked cylinder.  Otherwise it is working well.  Considering it is 12 years old maintenance/repair is required.  I guess we have to ask the question - how long should something last before it wears to the point of failure.  12 years doesn't seem too bad to me.  This FoFum is mostly comprised of threads that focus on maintenance, repair or upgrades and I am extremely glad that it is here.  :D

I would rather it did not malfunction but it is what it is. Although the slide issues are frustrating I would still rather have a FT than anything else on the road.  :-)

That pin problem is one we haven't had.

I will tell you that the trip to HWH last month was the best thing we've done to solve our slide problems.  They have worked perfectly since.

There should have been an extra day of the ladies driving school to get Rhonda and Peggy up to speed on these slide repairs;  You and I wouldn't have to concern ourselves with it.

Today we have a water issue.  I will start a post about that shortly.

It is not sensing the room is in.  Take the header off and there are a couple magnets on the side do the lock block. Move them down a pinch and try it again.  The other thing you can do is have someone bring in the slide and you rock it backward a bit by pushing up on the header.  If that works your slide is out of adjustment.

John,

I currently have the header off--we are having it reupholstered.  What do you mean by the lock block?  Is this in the area where the upper pins are?

Brad,

I didn't thank you for the link to the HWH email form.  I'll try that when the weather warms up around here.

You're welcome.  Glad to help, Rich.  HWH has been wonderful in its help to me.  You might share what you learn about the locks.  Occassionally, I have to cycle the pump one more time after retraction to get the locks to latch.  But never several times.  I have something in the very middle of the top that looks like a magnet, but I'm not sure.  My header will be off til the cylinder gets back if you need me to look for anything.  I probably have your twin...if it is Cornflower Blue.

Brad - is this the magnet looking thing that your referenced?  It is the microswitch that controls the red light on the slide control panel.  It is mounted in the middle of the large slide behind the header.  When the microswitch is in alignment (top to bottom) the light goes off.  The wires that energize that light were cut by the slide guide brackets and blew a 2 amp fuse in the first layer of the HWH control box a while back. The blown fuse prevented us from operating the slide.  Randy @ HWH walked us through this one.

It is a black cylinder that is attached to the lock block. See that it is 1/4 inch off the slide roof. I do not think other than telling you about this magnet hwh will be able to remotely help. Try bringing it in an with the retract still pushed you need to push up a bit on the center of the slide. It might pin then. If it does it is a room in sensor.

Yup.  That is what I spotted.  I saw that it could be moved.  Sounds like I should make sure I don't have any wires there that are in position to get sliced.  As long as I am fiddling around anxiously, waiting to put it all back together.

Try shaking it first.  Then take the two magnets out and swap them as that sometimes works too.

The microswitch that I showed above does not have any control properties regarding the operation of the slide.  When the slide is fully extended and the microswitch is in proper alignment the Red light on the slide control panel by the driver's seat will go out.  Our switch is no longer energized and the slide works fine.  Randy @ HWH said that I should hold the Extend button in place 4 to 5 seconds after the slide appears to be fully extended so the slide is fully extended - then turn off the key in the control panel.  I will replace that microswitch the next time we take the header off to reupholster and replace the lower rear cylinder.

Brad,

Ours was cornflower blue until this week.  Everything is out and at the upholsterer for a needed refresh.

Finally warmed up enough here to be able to get out and work on the coach.

I got in the queue at HWH and received a call back the next day.  Worked with Randy and figured out that one of the 3 5000psi pressure switches (there are 4 total on the sync cylinder) that FOT had replaced in Nov was not working properly.  (I had asked FOT to replace them because they were seeping some fluid out of the end where the electrical wire exited the unit).  HWH shipped me one (no charge--still under warranty from the FOT repair) and I replaced it.  Slide now works fine.  Total time to fix, about 2-3 hours--not counting waiting for phone calls and shipping.  I'm very pleased with the HWH support.
