Air Dryer Emergency Bypass Fitting

I made this to allow us to get us off the road in case of an air dryer failure.

Barry,
What diameter are the fittings?

The diameter of the 90 degree steel air dryer fitting is:

3/4" MJIC male-flare x 1/2" male-pipe.

Part # 2501-12-08, $4.82 each.

You will also need a plug for the governor control line.

Twig,

It seems that ideally we should add fittings for all the smaller air lines, so the governor can turn off compressor.  Sounds like phase II.

I just did it to get out of Quartzsite. Only the coupling of the air lines and blocking of the unloader is required. You can drive unlimited miles as long as you drain tanks. Lucky enough to find a brand new dryer on Ebay for less than the rebuild kit.

You could probably sell those to others if interested in small side line.

I would like to have seen someone from FOT chime in on this post or maybe they just do not monitor this forum.  This bypass seems to be a good idea.  How many of you have had an air dryer go out as it appears to happen very seldom and a rare occurrence.  DAN

While delivering a 3 year sob, the air dryer went out in Tulsa. I by passed it and drove it to Yuma, no problems, stayed on schedule.

The dryer on my 280 went and I could not keep up air pressure.  Mobile mechanic came out and bypassed it and I was able to drive it home, remove and rebuild the dryer.  No problem since but I do keep the fittings ( brass ) that the mechanic used.
Except for access anyone could do this if physically able.

Dan, While the dryer failure is a seldom seen occurrence, I can assure you that when you are watching that air pressure gauge (s) drop ,and you are in a tight situation the 15 min. that it takes to plug the line and install the bypass is much better than the ??hr wait for a service tech. I say 15 min, because you might be a little nervous with the people honking at you.  My education began on the way back to OK from Colorado. While in a 1 lane road construction  site on the Turner Turnpike (a 75 mph turnpike slowed to 55)with concrete barriers on both sides on the 1 lane and NO place to go, I noticed the air pressure dropping . the construction zone was 5 mi long and the backed up traffic was out of site.We made it off but that had to have been one of the highest pucker factor events of my life.  Had it locked up a wrecker or service truck would have to have backed up between the barriers to have even gotten to me, that is assuming that I had survived the hundreds of upset folks that would have been stalking me with a rope.  Just a little food for thought .    Larry

It would sure be nice for someone to post a picture or two of where the typical connections are located to insert the bypass fitting...as well as what item needs to be plugged and its size (cap?  Plug?).  This sure sounds like a "need-to-carry" item.  I confess to very little knowledge regarding my air system.  I suppose it is the next system I need to spend time getting educated about.

Please?  Anyone???

Brad, this is one of the easiest items to service. All you need are the parts from Ryder Fleet online and take the unit off. and replace as directions show. Simple fix for a "train slide mechanic" Total parts is about $160

Brad is right.  Can anyone post pictures as to where this thing will go and what are we looking to do.  Where to put the plug and the by pass would be helpful.  Appears this could save a very unhappy experience.  DAN

Dan look at the diagram on page 2 and you will see an inlet on right side and outlet below that on base. These hose come off and connect to the "bypass fitting"
You also have to block off the control hose from other side if I am correct.

please forgive my ignorance, is it the cannister that is blocking the air, or is it something related to the base????
If the cannister is replaced, would it then work properly?

My experience was,a new to me coach that the dryer had not been properly serviced.  It was trash in the blow off valve .  Since I had no history I opted for a factory rebuilt unit from NAPA with a brand new history. I think everyone on here with an older coach has had to make "THE DECISION)  that  being , which end to start from.

Norm and I visited with FOT Billy Jack and they have a bypass assembly they put together.  Looks to be very substantial material, chrome or stainless I guess.  Will have some in on Wednesday. After that I will take a photo or two of their connections and maybe a photo of how it connects.  Price I gather is about $40 and then discount.

For anyone that is not mechanically minded or does not want to go looking for the parts, I guess that price would be ok. Trouble is , if you are of that mindset then to install it would be a challenge(maybe?) so that to me puts a kink in the carrying of the Bypass. If you need a mechanic to install it then the same guy can(should be able to) install the parts to fix the Dryer.
I do not have this Bypass as I keep on top of the service requirements of Dryer. To me it is kinda like-should I keep a spare starter motor or? just in case. Heck, we (most) all do not have a spare tyre and that is more likely to cause grief on a trip!

We are discussing air dryer problems that keep coach from building air, mostly from no maintenance.

But another different problem that is VERY hard to resolve is when an un-serviced air dryer lets its desiccant turn to powder and the white stuff goes out into the air system screwing up every valve, including HWH check valves, air brake pedal, etc etc etc.

Tony & Lora, It is not the canister blocking air. In fact the problems often talked about, are not blocking, but a valve in the base that stays open allowing air compressor to pump out into atmosphere instead of pumping into the air tanks. So we don't have enough air to run coach. Resolution is rebuilding the base valves or better just installing a Haldex factory rebuilt air dryer that probably has all new parts inside, including the two new filters.
