Axle Caps

Anyone have a source and size for axle caps. I'm referring to the caps that you use when your axles have been removed for towing. As someone else said, if you carry them you won't need them. This is for a 95 with an M11 and 4060 trans. Thanks.

Howdy Jor,  My wrench came with the coach.  A quick web search returned this:  http://www.alcoa.com/alcoawheels/north_america/en/info_page/accessories_hd_hug_a_lug.asp
Looks just like the one I have.  Might be able to find one at a large truck stop.

I talked to this one man manufacturer last year. Nice guy and he makes covers for a lot of different types: Blank Title - Home If he's not in, try this source: http://www.zips.com/Store_Products.aspx?CAT=158

Rear axle manufactures specify that both axles must be pulled, not just one like many tow truck drivers want to do.

I'm replacing my rear rotor today and tomorrow. I'm going to make a template and make axle caps out of a plastic cutting board or something similar. It can be larger or even square...it just has to have all the holes in it!

Excellent idea! Plastic cutting board would be about the same thickness as an axle.

On some coaches, every other lug nut has to be taken off to remove the chrome cover so you can pull the axles. That means buying the correct flip socket for the nuts.

Ahh, well...mine has hub piloted wheels, so the plasti-chrome cover is held on by 10 plasti-chrome nuts. It's all apart right now...including hub off for a rotor replacement.

Somebody before me used red RTV on the right side axle and front hub covers....it was a mess to clean up.

I forgot to cut a template when I had the axle out. But, I bought a spare axle gasket to throw in my parts box ( $2). From that it's easy to trace out and cut a piece of plastic.

I don't know about other year Foretravels, but it looks like the u-joints have to be pulled apart to get the drive shaft off. This is unlike most driveshafts that just require a couple bolts. So, pulling the axsle looks like the only option for towing to me.

Pulling 1 axle could still cause the transmission to spin as well.

Pulling one axle will cause the spider gears to turn rapidly. They are not designed to do this and will not get the proper lubrication and could cause a failure sooner or even thousands of miles later. Drag racers have had failures from spinning the right rear tire coming off the line. The spider gears have bushings not roller or ball bearings.

There was a previous discussion on this subject. Axle Caps (split from Going down highway and white smoke coming out) I called Dana and in talking to one of the engineers, was told it was never OK to tow without pulling both axles.
