LED Indicator lights

I will be opening the dash soon to look for a spare wire from the engine compartment to the dash so I can put in a towed brake activation light on the dash. While in there I want to replace the generator "run" LED and the Boost switch "on" LED. They both do not come on.
Can I buy the LEDs and just solder them in? or is it easier to just replace the switches? Has anyone done this before?

Yes, you can get LEDs pretty much anywhere.  First I would check to make sure it's the LED that is bad.  They tend to last a long time.  Should be a push fit.  I get mine from Radio Shack:
