part number for nylon replacement fan for my 8.2 turbo V8

I still have the fiberglass fan in our 89 GV with the 8.2 turbocharged V8-rear radiator. It looks a little rough--78,000 miles on odometer. Has anyone replaced the fan with a nylon one? If so, do you have a part number for me?

We do have two very large electric fans on the back bumper side of the radiator drawing air thru the radiator. Would these two fans, by themselves, be adequate for moving air thru the radiator? They do seem to move a lot of air!!

I only wish several electric fans could replace our hydraulic fan pump/motors. I would give the lot a toss in a second. I'm afraid your OEM fan moves a lot more air than the electric ones do. 8.2s are a little marginal for cooling as is. The only way to do it would be to add a couple of front radiators behind the twin grills. That way, electric fans could do the whole job.

Thanks Pierce. I'm still hoping someone has done the change and has the part number so we aren't down until we get a new one or find out the nylon fan is not available for our engine. With the rear radiator it is a real PITA to remove and or replace the fan. I still have the "straddle horses" I made to remove the alternator so that part isn't too difficult. It's my back that is the ongoing problem. I wish Michael was here--Maybe I could use Kent's "persuasion".

Nitehawk,

I get to work 10 minutes out of every hour. Hoping laser surgery can do the trick. Fitting the fireproofing down in the compartment has been a struggle. No wonder many shops won't work on RVs.

Pierce, I do the "backbreaking" stuff after getting the two epidural shots ($6,000)--one above & one below L4. Then I have about a month of relatively painfree movement. I do use my Shiatsu Massage cushion on my back every morning in order to relax the back muscles.

Howdy Nitehawk,
Although different years and engines, this link to Scott's ordeal may have the answer for  you:  Fiberglass radiator fan explosion!
Hopefully, Scott will chime in with some more info.

Scott has a 6V92, same as mine.  Nitehawk has a different engine, 8.2 V8.  I suppose it could be the same fan - both are rear radiators.  I had mine changed at Foretravel back in 2001.
Invoice info: p/n: 8681,  Description: "FAN, PUSH*"  list of $205, net $185
The whole cooling system is Foretravel's design not Detroits.  It would be best to try to get it from Foretravel.  I don't know why but finding fans seems to be harder than other parts.  I would give FT some basics on the fan when ordering like diameter, number of blades, number of bolts and bolt circle if possible.  This will help them determine they have the right one for you.  If Foretravel doesn't have it, I would pull the old one and start visiting some truck parts houses to physically match to another fan - part numbers will probably not be helpful.  Probably won't be able to get the exact replacement (and of coarse you don't a fiberglass one even if they still made them) and you might even get one that will work better with more blades.  RPM is another factor:  is there a pulley that changes the ratio?  You'll need a general idea of what max. RPM the fan will run.  Some fans have adjustable pitch so you can get more flow with lower RPMs and also not stall the fan if the RPM is higher.

Thanks everyone, for the suggestions and information. Looks like no one has changed their fan on an 8.2 so I am going to give Mike grimes a shout. Mike had the same year GV coach and maybe the same DD 8.2 engine.

If not, it looks like I will have to pull the fan and go visit some auto parts stores and salvage yards. It is something I was trying to avoid, seeing as how we (the DW & I) have a lot of medical issues to resolve this next month.

Call Foretravel to get the part number of your old fan, then call the manufacturer of the fan, which was Flexalite in my case, and they'll send you the nylon version of the fan. The diameter of the fan, pitch of the blades, number of blades, size of blades, and of course the fact that it's a pusher fan instead of a puller will all be important engineering decisions. The original fan manufacturer will be able to determine this and send you the correct fan. Don't install anything but the correct fan.

The easiest way to get the fan out and new one installed is to cut the shroud in half at the top and bottom and then spread the shroud apart or perhaps remove half of the shroud with the fan. You'll have to drill holes and use small metal plates to rivet or bolt the shroud back together afterward. My fan shroud has been like this for a couple of years and it's holding up just fine. The fan comes out through the bottom of the coach. Ask Foretravel and they'll tell you exactly how to change the fan blade. Change your fan belts at the same time and carry your old belts as spares if they're still in good shape. Buy Gates belts because they really do last a lot longer. Carquest has Gates belts. Napa uses Goodyear belts I think, and they don't last as long. If you don't understand what I mean by cutting the fan shroud in half and riveting or bolting it back together with metal plates I can attempt to take a picture of what I did. It makes the job much MUCH easier! I have the 6V92TA Detroit Diesel, which is different than the 8.2 Detroit.

Thanks Scott, but I think it might be possible to remove the fan without cutting the shroud. I'll have to wait & see, after we get back from our trip we have to take for medical treatment for the DW.

With one person on top and another on bottom it's sometimes possible to slide the fan and shroud down and out of the coach together, but don't let anything hit the radiator or you'll create a leak.

Before you start, insert a sheet of cardboard to protect the CAC/radiator.
