Getting into the Bed

Howdy!
 
My darling wife is only five feet tall. She has trouble getting into bed without assistance, especially when her back starts acting up. She suggested a stool for her side of the bed.
 
I came up with the idea for a shelf, of the proper height, that would run along her side (passenger) of the bed. It would let her get in and out without worrying about where the stool is located. It would provide additional storage underneath for shoes or whatever DW wants to put there. If I anchor it between the two lower shelves in the night stand, she could still have full access to them and easy access to the bed.
 
But, in for a penny, in for a pound. I happen to have some heavy duty continuous door hinges (not unlike piano hinges, but designed for commercial doors). If I used a couple of them, I could make the whole side of her bed a raised platform. Underneath it would be a lot of room for bedding, linen, winter coats, or whatever DW wants to put there.
 
Has anyone built a shelf along the side of the bed for aid to climbing into bed? Has anyone built raised storage area as an elevated floor on one or both sides of the bed? What do you think about either of these ideas?
 
Please feel free to critique or help design my new bedroom. I have thick skin, so let's get that feedback flowing.

"She suggested a stool for her side of the bed."  That is what I did for my 5-ft wife.

We solved the same problem by getting a thinner mattress with a memory pillow top. We also have shoe bags from CW fastened to the dudes of the bed.
No RV! Have hung up the keys.

Uh ... can you supply a photo of the "dudes of the bed" with shoe bags attached? :o

We changed out the thin mattress with a memory pillow top for a thick beautyrest mattress. DW has a bit of a time "climbing" in bed. Don't know how we will manage when we get old.
