Search for LED lights. Lots of ideas out there.
I have replaced my flourecents with LED strip lights. Take out the guts of the flourescents and put in as many inches of the strips as is needed for the kev l of light you want. Strips come in 5 meter spools, warm or cool white (most people like warm), they have self stick tape on the back and can be cut and spliced at any length. Some strips are waterproof. Some have LED chips closer together. Prices range from $1/ft to almost $10. Splices and connectors are easy to find and cheap.
I have also put in a lot of 3" glass LED ceiling lights. They also make them in much higher lumen level in a 4.5" lamp. Two 4.5" lamps replaced the LED strip replacement for the flourescent over the sink. Much better light, less wattage, cooler. Most LEDs are dimmable. My preference is more light is better, dim as needed.
