Getting her put back together

Returned to my second home for a real shocker....pulled up and something didn't look quite right.  House, shop, boat and motorhome all broken into, wiring cut off for a few cents worth of scrap, control wiring cut out of CNC router table, Kawasaki diesel mule stolen, arrrrgh!  The boat and motorhome are the real heartbreakers, tho, cause those are the fun machines.  Plus I hate to think of my faithful mule possibly doing duty in some criminal activity along the border.

Don't want to get into too much of a tale of woe, but there is one piece of info I could use if anyone knows.  On the 50A mechanical shore power reel, how long is the cord, and how does it terminate into the coach?  Seems like it might be a twist lock but not sure.  My cord is now 6 feet long.

Things learned:  They accessed the coach by removing weatherstrip around entry door window and jimmying it open, reaching in and unlocking deadbolt.  This was after, of course, driving a screwdriver into the lift handle.  I may look into an alternate locking mechanism, possibly a double cylinder deadbolt to be used only when coach is unoccupied.

The engine battery compartment on my coach had no lock, maybe it's a safety mechanism but those red tops and sections of cables disappeared.  It will have a lock on it.  Natch, speaker systems, TV, amps, personal items were grabbed, around $35K in all not counting damage.

The big lesson, though, is there are real estate agents who can help nip this problem in the bud.  This property has been in my family for almost a hundred years, but Houston is getting too close.  Hopefully she is pounding the sign into the ground today.  When you get too much stuff, it owns you.

Chuck that is sad news, on a smaller scale I had my pride and joy lifted a very nice restored 55 Chevy pickup, That sick feeling of being violated comes to mind. it just pisses you off to no end.

Chuck,
If I understand your question correctly (how does the cord terminate into the coach?), it is not too easy, but not that bad.
The OEM, 4 conductor, SOO cable (35' on my U270 36') Red Reelcraft Manual Reel, was terminated in wire wing nuts after the strain relief hold down tabs at the bottom of the Reelcraft spool.  The OEM four conductor SOO cable was hard to bend around the last corner, then the individual conductors split into two conductors each for the eight brushes that ride the cable reel slip rings.  I changed my SOO OEM cable for SO cable with the same rating.  The SO cable is much easier to install in the limited cable reel (interior) space.  It just doesn't have as much thickness to the jackets (SOO doubles SO outer and inner jacket thicknesses, as I recall) .  Both the outer jacket and the inner 4 conductors are SO jacketed, but the overall cross section is less and therefore I could get more cable onto my reel (50') which I often needed with the 24' trailer.
Here's some cable reel interior pictures:

Chuck,

What a terrible thing to find. Home should be safe and pleasurable place to come to.

Not sure why your shore cable question, but if replacing a shore cable consider using SmartPlug instead of a Hubble-type twist plug. We love our SmartPlug with its three latches. None of the issues with untwisting.

Good luck.

Thanks everybody, my Foreforum friends, I appreciate it.  There was no security system on the property, other than being surrounded by relative's houses but these guys were sneaky.  After replacing cables and batteries in the coach I couldn't get it to crank, puzzled thru the schematics and figured the neutral safety switch was open.  Oh no, into the Allison computer harness and all that entails but had a sudden thought.  Opened the fuse panel cover by step and took a look at the defunct Trecmate security brain there...the thieves had cut a couple wires on it which happened to be in series with the neutral safety switch.  Tying these together cured the no start.

Neal, thanks for your world class pictures and explanation.  Exactly what I needed.  May I ask if you had to do any other mods than the SO to get your reel to retract 50'?  I'd like to do the same.

Jor, thanks for the idea...I'll just steal my sister's powercord! It's an exact fit!  :D :D :D :D

Andy2, wouldn't call a restored '55 on a smaller scale.  Oh man, words fail me.

Chuck,
I didn't have to do anything more than add a little more pretension to the reel to take up more cable.
I figured that 2 more turns of "Prewind/Pretension" on the reel would be about right, and it worked out well.  If one doesn't have enough pretension on the reel, after completing the "wiring-in" process, one has to take the wires all out again, add more tension, and then land the wires all over again.  Even with the reel unbolted from the deck, there isn't enough room to pass the cord and plug through any opening anywhere, to add tension if the cord is already on the reel.
I guess that I'm saying is, tie down the cable on the reel and run the reel once to make sure that it will retract all of the cable, before you land the wires.
There seemed to be plenty of slack in the take up spring, at least on mine, even after adding two more turns of pretension.  I did put a couple of Irwin, Quik-Grip, carpenter's, wood clamps on the reel, so that the reel wouldn't do harm if it got a mind of its own during the wire installation process.
Good luck with your recovery and so sorry for the feeling of violation and anger that this sort of thing creates.

Chuck,

I put one of these systems in my coach. It works over cell coverage as well as a stand alone system.  To get to the system they have to set it off.  Monthly fee very reasonable.

It appears that this system requires AC power, is that correct?

Ordered.  Lockin the barn after the horse is gone but will protect the new stuff which is replacing the old stuff.  Impressive system.

John,

Yes it does but has a backup battery.  If you have solar panels you could use a small inverter as it does not require much power.
