Ideas for Removing CRT Bedroom TV?

FWIW,
There are probably a dozen or more ways to replace that TV.  My thought is to remove the old 13 inch TV, Cut a piece of nice looking plywood to exactly fit the opening.  This would then be secured by screwing to the frame opening and then drilling the 4 mounting holes  (for TV) and an opening for the plug/connections.  I am thinking this will do it.  The new TV is a 20 inch and expecting this to be enough for covering the now plywood covered opening and not too large to project too much past the frame.  I have purchased the TV but not completed the change over just yet.

Does anybody have an ideas (or pictures) for after the removal of the BR TV altogether?  Storage or a shelf or two would be great...I barely watch the one up front & ain't no way I need one in the BR.

My FT is a 96 and the bedroom TV was a tube type 13 in panasonic.  It still works fine.  I'm not sure when the transition to the flat screens started.  I just wanted a newer flat screen model.  This new one has an integrated DVD and thought this might be good if I wanted to watch a movie.  My kids will sometimes ride in the back while traveling and watch movies.  I have the original VCR and a bunch of movies and they can insert them up front and watch them in the back.  They will be also able to watch DVD's in the back soon.  My FT did not come with a DVD.

I understand others have taken out the TV and made cabinets.  Not a bad idea if you don't plan on using. A good cabinet maker can probably do a door/hinge for you.  Others have done that.  I prefer the TV for now though.

A lot of people pull the TV put in a flat panel on a swing out board and put in a shelf behind the TV and you get all of the functionality of both the TV and the shelf.

Take a look at these pictures.  This is what the space looks like.  My bedroom TV had to be removed from the closet side in the bath area.

Gee that is a lot of space...thanks P and B....it doesn't work anyway, already have a nice new flat screen up front, so the extra space would be great to have.

Pulled our TV out, and finished the shelf area to be flat.  Then mounted the wireless printer in the space using the power outlet.  Some day I need to finish out the inside walls, and maybe add a door.

Drawers?  Ours were done by Flanagan's Merry Elves (Larry & Bookey) in the FOT Remodel bay.

Hi Dani,

We pulled out the old TV, finished the inside of the space, added a place for a DVD olayer and a shelf for wireless printer/scanner/copier, our cell phone boost amp and a 19" flat panel TV on a swing arm.

Not too many places where a printer will fit. 

It works pretty well for us even though we rarely watch BR TV.

I took out the Panasonic and installed a19-20" Vizio.
The mounting holes on the TV were such that I just used a couple of brackets on the original TV base.

I put a Sony Bluray player in the top drawer and a power bar so I cam hook stuff and power off without having to go through the closet wall.

Hey Raymond,

It is a 19" Vizio LED TV with front mounted speakers. When I put in an 39" LED up front I traded the older 32" LCD for the 19" Vizio.  Everybody was happy.

Friction.  The TV mount has allen head screws/bolts that go throught the vertical pivot joints.  Snugged them up until the tv moved when I pulled on it and stayed put otherwise.  There is a 1" round felt self stick floor protector on the front of the side cabinet ond one on the back of the left side of the tv.  When the tv is in the closed position the front lower right corner of the tv bumps up against the cabinet mounted felt bumper and the back side bumper hits the vertical edge of the original cabinet.

I thought about removing the whole angled part of the original tv cabinet and trying something different but the tv needs to be in its parked position at least to be able to watch it and when it was there it becomes the door.  Everything else fits in there too so I just left it.  Maybe someday inspiration will bubble up but it was the easiest way to get what I wanted.

We are totally with you on this. 

I removed the TV, leaving all the wiring in place.  We had Dave Flanagan (sp?) put a door on the front and now Audrey has a huge great storage area.  We didn't bother to finish the inside.  It's fine as it is.  The next owner could easily add a flat screen to the door if'n they wanted a bedroom TV.

I plan to install my new BR tv soon. It is a similar size to yours (20).  I did get one that had an integral DVD player that inserts on the Left side (which for my layout) is next to the aisle going forward. I like the idea of using the stand and may utilize that.  It could easily be screwed down for security through the rear access.  I was thinking that maybe could use a "hidden door" in the rear access to hide stuff in  the event of a break in (since front had plywood closure). I already have the nice piece of  plywood and was trying to utilize what I aready had.

 I tried on the front TV to do a door access for space behind and though it is present, it isn't a great storage area for me.  I think this is more a reflection of my wood working skills than anything else. The access to the various plugins on the front TV is great.  I am happy with the new TV up front and looking forward to the new one in the rear.  Thanks for the feedback.

Harvey, great idea, lots of room once the TV is out but leaving the wiring....smart, if perchance down the road I decide to trade up, someone else can always put one in. Thanks all for some super ideas & excellent pics.
