9012 HIR headlights

Has anyone tried to replace the 9006 lamp in the Silverado style headlights with a Philips 9012 HIR lamp?  My son-in-law did this to his 2002 truck he keeps at the ranch and claims the improved lighting is amazing.  I am now considering this for our 2005 coach and was curious if anyone else has seen improvement.

I just ordered a pair of 9012 and 9011 lamps. As soon as I get to try them I will let you know. I may just put them in one side for comparison.

Consider using the largest spare Foretravel wire to bring alternator / center tap isolator voltage to power headlights. Maybe as much 2 volts higher from higher alternator voltage & less voltage drop will make a brightness difference.

I finally had the opportunityto install the HIR2 lamps in the headlights.  I also adjusted the headlights because the left headlight was illuminating the tops of the trees. While it is brighter, it's probably not that much brighter.  I still need to adjust the headlight aiming more. My last attempt was not in the best of locations and was just approximate.  As an indication of how insufficient the lighting is, I left the lights in high beam and did not get one person flashing me with there headlights. Part of the problem is the aiming, but I think the lenses are not clear enough. Considering ordering Spyder projector headlight assemblies when I return home.

Steve,

Check voltage at the headlight.  Let us know what it is with engine at high idle. Compare to voltage at the chassis battery, same conditions.

Too cold here in the mountains.  I was going to start working on them when I return home in a couple of weeks. In the garage, I will be able to accurately adjust the lights and measure voltages.

Yes very interested in the options.  Got to Nach after dark in the rain Sunday night and it was by braile the last 50 miles.

There are other things I'd rather do with $3,500 than redoing the headlights.

I feel that if Foretravel built a motorhome that is unsafe at night; the upgrade should be on FT dime. And if not maybe the NTSB should demand a recall. I hope I do not upset fellow members.

Make sure the ford f150/bronco headlights are aimed correctly. And then get a cheap restore/polish kit from walmart ($10-20). It made a huge difference in mine.

Mainly, they were aimed at the ground! The adjusters are messed up but I could get it set right by crawling underneith and putting a socket directly on the backside of the screw.

The problem with expecting FOT to pay for it is that properly adjusted they meet the standards set by DOT and NHTSA. With newer lights that are available visibility is so much better that I would like to improve what I have.

The problem with most HID conversions is the are illegal.  HID conversions which just replace the halogen lamp with a HID system does not meet current regulations.  I am still researching the projector conversions.

Thank you for explaining the headlight; I did not know. Wrong again the story of my life.

2002-2006 (OP has a 2005) has Chevy Silverado headlights, mounted quite a bit higher up (it appears, anyway) than the 1995-2001 coaches.

We complained about, and had the aiming of the OEM headlights checked, several times with no improvement.

Hello and happy holidays. Just so everyone is perfectly clear on my last post these are in fact aftermarket cheap Taiwanese copies of HID projection headlights with Halo and LED bumper lamps. They are for a 99 to 2002 Silverado pickup truck delivered to my house in Magnolia Texas I paid $187. Installation was supposed to be a simple bolts in unfortunately the aluminum square tubing that was factory built was not one of Foretravels best designs. However once installed I measured the center of the headlights from the ground and the center to center moved the motorhome back 25' from my garage door and adjusted and aimed the headlights at those points. After the installation of the headlights we took a 2400 mile round-trip from Magnolia Texas to HWH in Moscow Iowa during that whole trip not one person flashed to tell me my lights were bothering them. The ability to see with these lights was night and day over what was originally installed, are they legal in the state of Texas or anywhere else installing HID in halogen housing I unaware of any of that. My ultimate plan was to buy Hella Hid 90 mm projection headlamps with the ballast and all the hardware for $483 apiece but after this installation I may just wait a while before I do a full conversion. Once again are these the best HID projection headlights absolutely not. They enhance my driving ability at night 100%  the Halo with the LED bumper lamps during the day gives the motorhome an updated look. Thank you John  PS I enjoy tinkering very much by shimming the HID bulb in the housing you are able to almost eliminate the hotspots associated with cheaper HID projection headlamps.

We did a headlight conversion using 7" round LED headlights from J. W. Speaker. The new position and new lamps provide a remarkable improvement in lighting compared to the (too) low OEM headlights. The LED headlights operate on voltages from 9-32 VDC. No new wiring is required in order to get full output. We have been pleased. Speaker also make 90 mm LED projector headlights.

I recently replaced the headlight on our 2002 Subaru Toad with TYC headlight housings and Sylvania premium bulbs. The improvement is remarkable. The pattern and brightness are newer and better. Similar improvements may be available for other old headlights, especially those with cloudy lenses.
