Wax valve for radiator fans

Has anyone changed the wax valve for the fans on a 97-98 U270 to get the fans to go to high speed.

We were able to check that our high speed valve works.  We permanently put a ball valve on one of the small hoses and when closed forces fans into high speed.  When coolant is not hot enough for valve to put fans into high speed, the closed ball valve will.  When coolant is hot enough to put fans into high speed, the closed ball valve makes no difference.

I have heard that the valve comes apart and may be cleaned or partially replaced.

I heard the wax capsule setup is a universal long term good setup.
