Clearance Lights Problem

I've been trying to track down a problem that recently started with my clearance lights .... so after doing the "seek & destroy" method for awhile , I decided to ask Foretravel about it ... this is the message that I sent to them.

Hi , I have a 1985 33RB Foretravel motor home and recently the clearance lights started acting up .... when I turn the headlight switch on , everything comes on , but when I turn them back off the clearance & rear lights all stay on . I replaced the relay , and that didn't help the problem . So here's my question ... since I'm not the most mechanically inclined person , what is the feedback that they mentioned , and how do I locate it in my motorhome ?

The feedback is that power is getting to those lights without going through the switch. In overly simple terms, the electricity is supposed to go from the battery to the switch. When the switch is in the ON position the electricity then goes to the relay. The relay closes and sends electricity to the lights. If the lights don't come back on when you replace the battery cable I'd be suspicious of the relay or the associated wiring. Since you already replaced it, either you got a defective relay or the wiring is at fault.

I'd suggest you take a good look at the wiring, especially places where connections are made and where wires to and from the relay touch. If you want to be proactive, or your dash lights aren't working perfectly, you might want to replace the headlight switch.

Another possible culprit is the ICC switch. I don't know whether it uses the same relay or not, but I suppose it is possible that it is misbehaving.

Thank you for the information Dave ... I am heading out to check out my wiring in just a second , to make sure I don't have on problems in the wiring that is directly involved with the switch and the relay .

Disconnect the terminals on the headlight switch. If the lights go out, replace the switch.

So I disconnected the terminals on the headlight switch while the lights were on ... nothing . Then I ran through and did some repairs to any of the wiring that is directly involved with the switch and the relay ... still nothing . So then I started disconnecting wires from the relay while the lights were on ... and the lights shut off when I disconnected the red wire ... so I think I might have bought a bad relay switch
