King throttle - cruise control rebuild

Our King cruise / throttle control has working fine, but it has not been looked at since Steve Boller changed board & cable many years ago.

So we thought that a stop at Steve's Faribault MN town would be a good idea.  Since the majority of parts are original, we figured it is a good preventative measure to replace all parts.

We parked at Faribault MN Super Walmart and Steve drove over, removed the control box, took it to his shop to rebuild it and run a several hour load test.  A few hours later Steve installed the box, adjusted the new throttle cable and sent us on our way, but we only made it to Mystic Lake Casino for the night.

The King Control is only used on Cummins mechanical C8.3 engines and was used for about 3 years for 4 motorhome manufacturers.  Steve says he rebuilds about 60 per year.  Steve also sells a similar after-market cruise control for older trucks.

Cruise Controls for Diesel engines.

The troubleshooting documents on his site were incredibly helpful when I was having some intermittent issues a few years ago.

I called them last year about getting my rebuilt. During long periods of using cruise control on the highway, it "slips" and will not go to full throttle on hills. If I hit the brake and let it go to idle then push pedal again, I get the power back.

When I get some down time I am going to mail it to them for a rebuild. I'm also looking to pick up a spare unit, if anybody wants to get rid of one!

Spare King Controls are not available from Steve Boller as I don't think he has anymore boxes.  Some have removed King Controls and installed air throttle in place, so those converters would have had a spare.
Straight forward to remove and send off.  Remove two nuts holding box to frame, loosen throttle cable and unplug several cables.  I recommend getting the repair done as soon as possible, as a disabled box will require the clothsline throttle enhancement.

Barry, when installing an air throttle, the king control is still used for the cruise control.
