Engine won't shut off

Several times when shutting down the engine won't shut off. If I jiggle the key from accessory to run a couple of times it works. Is this the ignition switch or the solenoid or what?

My guess: ignition switch, or wiring connected to it.  Next time it happens, try using the STOP switch in the engine compartment.  If that works properly, pretty much condemns the dash switch.

I had the same thing happen to me last month. I got a replacement ignition switch from NAPPA and all is good.

Larry,

No need to guess.

Locate the small positive terminal of the ignition solenoid.  Next time this happens, check that terminal with a voltmeter or test light.

It you have 12 VDC to it, then the ignition switch is the "likely suspect".

If, as it should, when you turn the key off, there is no 12 VDC positive to that signal terminal on the solenoid, then the solenoid is the "likely suspect".  If this is what your test shows, give the solenoid a light, sharp rap with a plastic handle screwdriver.  Will likely free the sticking contact (temporarily).

Locate fuel shutoff solenoid on curb side rear of engine.  Running solenoid is energized up, stopped solenoid is relaxed and down.  Many have had start, run and shut off problems because of solenoid.
If solenoid is malfunctioning, just manually move to correct position and keep it in place with cable ties until replaced.  No need to be towed because of a solenoid problem.
Cummins has redesigned solenoid and now is larger.  Fuel shut off solenoid is used on mechanical C8.3 engines.  We think original solenoids should be replaced with redesigned unit.

I had a new redesigned solenoid installed last Feb.  It comes with a new bracket as well.  Take extreme care removing the 3 old bolts from the fuel pump.  The tech broke one of the 2 vertical bolts.  We looked at the issues and decided to reinstall with the two remaining bolts.  Everything was good for 4 months and 4K miles.  The new bracket broke off, and broke a bolt, or the bolt broke and then the bracket broke off.  The repair was tedious to remove the now two broken bolts.  The newest bracket is a redesign of the Feb. bracket as well.
