Fuel Filter ISL 400

Engine started loosing power and missing yesterday. Check engine light would come on& go off. Looked at the bowl on the bottom of the filter and it had sand in it. Opened the cock to drain the filter to change and it wouldn't stop draining. Should the diesel continue to run out when changing the filter. This is the filter with the button on top...primary filter I guess ?

The primary fuel filter is in the battery compartment, and no the fuel should stop running out after about 1/2 a coffee can of fuel.

MAYBE.  Totally depends on level of fuel in the tank vs level of the filter housing.  If level of fuel in tank is higher, fuel WILL run out.  Even worse, if level of fuel in tank is lower, fuel will run back to the tank leaving you with 30+' of AIR in the fuel line.

Best and very inexpensive answer is to put a ball valve on the inlet to the primary fuel filter.  Close it to change filters OR as a really good anti-theft device!

Did the filter change today, raised the rear of the coach so not a lot of diesel spilled. Will put in a couple of ball valves when we get home.

Now....the primary filter was really dirty. Would that make my fuel mileage suffer ? Since I left Texas in May my mileage has been slowly dropping.

Can any of you furnish a good number for the secondary filter ? I took the old stuff to the disposal site, then got home and found I had the Primary number (FS19532) twice, and no secondary.

Can't imagine it would do the mileage any good but don't know if your fuel pressure dropped and if it did, what did the fuel pressure sensor tell the computer and then what did it do if anything. Your dirty filter could have come from a tankfull of contaminated diesel (out of spec or lower BTUs) that could have caused reduced mileage. Then again, it could just be headwinds. Makes a big difference on ours.
