12 volt plug by passenger chair

Discovered a plug/socket 12 volt on wall next to front passenger seat; however,  when I plugged a 12 volt fan into it the fan was going backwards.  Would this mean the socket is wired backwards?  Also there is a A/C fan control switch for the dash air  and a switch which I finally figured out turns on the lighting under the coach.  I would like to use this 12 volt socket but if it is wired backwards I need to ck this out.  Any one with experience concerning this 12 volt socket and how do you know if it is wired backwards?

The center pin of the "cigar lighter" receptacle should show +12 V (roughly) when a volt-ohm meter is connected between the center pin and the outer shell of the receptacle.

So David you are saying that the center should be the hot and the ground is the outside cylinder.  TKU

Correct. Center pin is +12v, sides are -12v.  Normal FT wiring uses white wire for the +12v side and green wire for the ground.

You can loosen (but don't remove) the two screws on the 120 v outlet which allow you to get the outlet out so you can see the 12v socket and the wiring.

After you confirm the 12v socket is wired correctly with a volt meter then I would check the wiring on the fan.

I recently added a pair of USB ports for charging phones or tablets.  Handy place for them for the passenger to use.  They are very low power so I just tapped into the wiring to the 12v socket (which was wired correctly).

Roger,

Does that mean it is providing 24 volts to the outlet?

Systems are 12vdc not 24vdc. Center pin should be the positive, side should be the negative. Measurement will be +12vdc provided you have the meter probes configured correctly.
